Have any of you guys ever located a bird about 150yds away and hes gobbling his head off, so you get set up and start calling and you hear nothing. So you keep patiently waiting and calling softly and eventially you think he has moved off with some hens so you stand up and take a few steps and there he is 30 yds away and you end up spooking him .Please tell me im not the only one this has happened to.

My motto is stay put till you can't stand it anymore, then stay 10 minutes longer! And it will still happen to ya.

In 06 this story happened to me and my cousin both being unexpeirenced hunted all morning couldn't get a single bird to commit. We left about 10 and drove to the top of gravel road to his dads property 1/2 mile or so across the county road got out and called, heard nothing answer. On his dads place there is a cemetary up the road 200 yards we drove to the cemetary and got out and called again, a bird answered a faint gobble I may add but I told him listen and see if it gobbles again I was using a box call so the sound would carry better again he said I heard it. These woods drop off into a holler were we had been all morning I said lets go back down there I think this bird will work. Got in the truck drove back to the holler on that gravel road I spoke about got out walked across the field that bird was hot he was gobbling at any noise it heard it seemed. We got to the ridge the bird was on I guess we walked 100yds or a little more I called the bird answered closed the distance a little more what I thought was comfortable called again the bird was closer, I said "sit he's on his way" I called agian no reply I thought crap I got to close, my cousin said I'm going try to get about another 10yds or so I said "no" as he started belly crawling up the ridge I see why the bird didn't reply the last time I called he was coming in quiet the next noise I heard was putt putt bye bye bird b/c of no patience, but can't say anything about to much it happened to me the very next day on the joining property where he had screwed up the day before. I know it will happen to me again b/c I do get inpatient a lot it seems during turkey season I just love the sport so much I want that bird bad:)

If your not getting aggressive and going after the bird.
Then:
When you think you have sat there long enough - look at your watch and sit there for another 20 minutes.

When you hit your call - The Tom knows where you are within 8 feet.
If he isn't coming, it's only because he doesn't want to.

I think all turkey hunters have this happen to them at least once. i have had it happen to me as well. This is where the beginner hunter learns that turkey hunitng requires a whole lot of patience.

You aren't the only one, nor is it the last time it will happen to you;)

Nope, never happened to me. Not even once.

By the way, I'm selling the Ohio river bridge from Evansville to Henderson and I'll make ya a heck of a deal. :)

had one come in directly behind me one time. I was sitting against a BIG oak and when i stood up (after not hearing him for almost an hour) he was 6 feet from the other side of the tree. I was to flustered to even get my gun to my shoulder before he flew away...:o:D
