Wondering if theres any AG majors on here and what you do for a career..Right now Im a Bio/Fisheries major at MSU, but ZO221 is really kicking my butt. I have alot of experience in AG and I kinda wish I would have declared my major in agronomy to begin with. I refuse to go under a 3.0 and right now Im sitting around a 66 in my Bio class and after getting sideways with my professor today I realized how sick of Bio I really am. Most of my buddys here are ag majors and they really like it. Im probly gona audit my bio class which will cost me 6 hours, but Its a small price for leaving something Im sick of to go into something I care about...I talked to my parents today and they both gave me the "do what you really want" speach. I could really use some advice. Its making me sick. :(

I have a BS in Agronomy and Range Management. I currently work as a golf course superintendent. I have done ranch work in Texas and landscaping. Agronomy is a good choice for an ag degree. You can work in any field that deals with pesticides or soils or plants. I have classmates that work anywhere from managing a greenhouse, NRCS field agents, feed mill manager for Tyson's and a couple in ag product sales. My only advise is to make sure, no matter what!, that you spend summers to internships in some sort of related field to your degree choice. The ag industry is getting more competitive and any advantage you can get means more money and more chances to get the job that you want. I took the most money route in the summer, working in factories, and paid for it by having trouble finding a good job out of college.

Hang in their it will be worth it in the future. Just because you major in something doesn't totally define what your job will be in the future. I am a Ag major and I now work in the public health field as a health inspector.

I have a AG degree in Livestock Production-Beef. Started out as a Farm Manager on a Tobacco and Beef farm, Ran a Research Farm then went into ag sales. Now I do Dairy Feed Sales/Dairy Nutrition for a large feed company.
You can do a lot of things with an Ag. degree.
First, you need to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. Figure out a solid goal & then work toward that goal. If you went into Bio/Fisheries because you want to do that, I don't see that Ag is gonna get you there. If you switch to Ag as a major, & then you run into a bear of a class (say Ag Econ), what are you gonna do - change to another major? If you have no plan, everything other than what you're doing will look appealing. You need to get a plan, put your head down, & just do it!
BTW, isn't 221 just General Zoology? Three hours of class & a lab, right? I took that from Prof. Sickel at Murray State & got an "A", & I am far from a Biology genius. The trick to doing well in classes like that is to realize that there is no trick - you just have to bust your butt & learn the material. Most students will spend more time trying to figure out how to game their way thru than it would take to just learn the stuff to begin with. So, try to figure out who in your class is currently leading the pack & then see if they will study with you. However, be prepared to study, not play, because the kind of folks who smoke those kinds of classes aren't doing so by accident.
Good luck!

I am a senior Agronomy major at EKU. (don't mention this on the waterfowl forums by the way - they seem to hate people who go to college and especially aggies lol)
I am graduating this spring and I starting a Masters at UK in Plant and Soil Sciences.
If its only one class getting you down my advice is to stick it out. Do what you love, blah blah blah
As far as carears go I am heading for a pHD BUT most of my friends are not going to graduate school. It seems that mostly they are getting jobs with Farm Credit Services and with similar financial institutions.
What are your future plans? I have 5 older siblings and might be able to be some help based on their and my experience...

dude, you aren't the only one on here to go to college. grow up a little. you simply stated your opinion and others put forth another, in that case a correct one... congrats on getting your degree and going to grad school by the way.
PSE,
don't let one class make a choice for the path of the rest of your life. figure out what you want to do and then work toward that goal. if you have to drop and retake the class, so be it. If you want to switch majors and follow a different career path, then by all means go for it. I started out at UK as an animal science major and ended as an English major. Can't make much more of a switch than that:D

I agree with pentail. If its one class try your hardest - if you fail take it again. I have had to do the same thing in the past. Also your degree is broad and you can take it in several directions as soon as you get these crappy classes behind you it will get much better.
pentail - that was a bad attempt on my part to make light of a earlier disagreement..

My professor is Whiteman. Hes known as one of the tougher professors on campus. After talking to my advisor this evenning I decided Im gona bear down and try to ace out the next test and take it from there. Thanks for the imput guys, I appreciate it.
