I know once I write this some may not believe me, but on my way to work this week I have seen a field full of hens and there were 2 gobblers strutting right in the middle of them. Isn't this just way too early? I have never seen this. This is some bottom lands and I have been seeing these big flocks of hens for several weeks, but 2 different days this week their have been 2 birds strutting with about 40 or so hens. What do you think they were doing?

Them old toms are remembering the past, thinking about what's getting close.

Could be they're establishing or reinforcing the pecking order so there won't be any question on which one will be the breeder. I once watched 3 groups of 4 gobblers each (three different age groups) in deer gun season in November and all 12 strutted for about an hour. The groups had to keep their distance from each other or a butt kicking soon followed.

I've saw toms strut in the dead of winter, like turk2di said anything those turkey do anymore don't suprise me either. Those toms strutting in that field you saw they are just getting ready, and toms are just like us guys, if we got into a room full of women we would strut too.:D:D

Two weeks ago and warmer weather than now on the way to BG saw 4 toms in a field and one of them was all fanned out--I know usally a couple to three weeks before season I'll be chasing the white bass up the creeks and the turkeys will be thundering everywhere

It is getting time. Give them a few warm mornings and they will be tearing it up.

Back during deer season. I had a Tom that would hang out practically all day. The other toms would chase him off, but he would circle and come back after the others left.
Well, he would hang out all day just for the ladies to show up. He would walk into the middle of all those hens and blow up. He would then strutt all around in and out of the hens, It was a real cool site to see and he did it almost everytime I was hunting. He would strutt until they all walked off. He would not pressure any of the ladies at all, he would simply walk around them. I guess - he was a ladies man. I would like to get him this spring.

Days are getting longer that is what triggers mating behavior. I've noticed the last few years the end of Feb. a few toms will join the big flocks of hens and jakes.

I've seen tom's strutting with hens every month of the year, this activity does increase in the spring but I've seen it in january with a snow on..
Most of the time's have been in the same place where a guy feeds turkey's.. Went by there today and there was about 75-80 there eating. Tom's strutting all over the place
