go for it-at that price, whatcha got to lose? I've never heard anything bad about Savage, or the 7mm Rem. Mag., or for that matter, Simmons scopes.

Savage isn't a bad gun. I don't care for Simmons. When it comes to optics, you get what you pay for. I would think that the gun alone would be worth $250. Put a decent scope on it and put the Simmons on a smaller (less recoil) gun.

Well I went and got it. Total cost was 263.25 not to bad. lol

The scope is crap. Toss it and the aluminum bases and rings and put a good scope, rings and bases on the rifle and you'll be fine. The give away Simmons scope is about a $10 wholesale scope. It might hold up on a .22, but I wouldn't recommend it.

That Simmons scope on that particular gun may be crap, but you can't lump all Simmons scopes in that category. I have a couple of the high end Simmons scopes that are really nice units.
I don't think you'll be disappointed in that Savage. I have one in .270 (didn't come from Wal Mart though) that is an excellent shooter. Many reviews I've read tout them as one of the most reliable accurate guns straight out of the box out there, with a killer price to boot.

I agree that some of the Simmons line is fine. I particular like and often reccomend the Aetec to a lot of my customers. But the package guns from Savage are a waste of money concerning the optics. I made the same mistake on the ML 10 II and had to replace it after about 6 shots or so. I also decided to trade out the mounts while I was at it, because the ones on the package are very cheap repos of the Weaver style mounts made of steel.

If it has the aluminum mounts as Multi has suggested, replace them now. Aluminum mounts will not stand up to the recoil of a belted magnum.

I have a Savage 30.06 I bought in Wal-mart in 1998 with the same scpoe on it. I have killed 7 deer with it and it seems to be doing fine. I have never shot a 7mm Mag, do they kick that much harder than a 30.06? I heard someone say they kill at both ends, meaning they kick pretty hard. I do have a Ruger 10/22 I could put that scope on, What do you all recommend I put on it? I like the 3X9 variable scopes what is a good name brand that is affordable?

I will show my ignorance here about rifles, but is a 7mm and a 7mm MAG one and the same?

Actually No. There is no rifle that is just a plain old 7mm. The 7mm Mag is so popular that it is just refered to as the 7mm.

Several years ago, I bought a Savage 30.06 at Wal-Mart for $150.00. The clerk said they had the gun in stock for over a year and could not sale it so the cut the price in half.

There are a few 7mm rounds out there. The 7mm Remington Mag of course, but there is also the 7mm-08 and the 7mmX57. If memory serves me right, I believe the 7mm x 57 is a military German mauser round, but I'm not sure.

Also FWIW, the 7X57 was the great Jack O'Conner's wife's(Eleanore I believe was her name)(SP?) favorite round(and he liked it as well) she used it to take many big game animals all over the world......
Another famous (forget his name at the moment) hunter killed many elephants(over 100 if memory serves) with one(with solids...brain shots)and favored it for it's accuracy and light recoil(which "elephant rifles" don't usually have..most kick VERY HARD)
The 7's are very good rifles, underrated IMHO and there are more than just the well-known Mag to choose from(nothing wrong with it either) [:)]

I bought a Savage model 110 at an auction of a gun dealership that was closing its doors. I put a Simmons Aetec 2.8-12x44 scope on it. One bit of advice is make sure your eye is clear of the scope when you shoot. Man that thing kicks like a mule!!! I shot it seven times one day, what a mistake! My shoulder was sore for 2 weeks. I have killed two deer with it though, so I am not going to change what is working.
A bad day hunting is better than a good day at work.

I bought a savage 110 7mm mag last fall. spent the winter customising. It was an older model, maybe mid eighties. paid 100 bucks for it. birch stock was light, but had no class. replaced with bell and carlson. installed trigger by sharp shooters supply. Fred at sharp shooter deals only with savage guns. knows his stuff. it had a bushnell banner fixed power. beat up but worked. always need a spare beater scope. bought a leupold 4.5 to 14 to hunt, and a sightron 6 to 24 for target and working up handloads. this savage now shoots 1/2 inch groups or less with the right powder and loads, if I do my part. it does not kick any more than an 0-6 with comparable loads, yet achieves grater velocities and energies. This is good. more range. i love my savage. sure, i got some dough into it. could have had a remmy 700 for that dough, but i still would have had to buy glass and tune it some. i highly recomend anyone on a buget but wanting a fine reliable accurate somewhat custom rifle, start with a savage action, cause you can pick up used ones SOOO cheap. also, not every one knows this, the barrels are EASY to swap out to a different caliber. Search the web and see for your self. They are acurate as all hell right out of the box. work em over to suit yer tastes and needs, and ya wind up with a fine semi custom rifle that will kick ass with most of the rest of the best.
