It's not hard to understand once you understand the commodities market. Oil companies have incredibly low profit margins per unit sold. However, they sell so many units, the profits do add up.
Here's a simple but pertty good explantion of how gas prices work.

One more thing. If you think HillaryClinton or anybody else can get the price down you are in for a big supprise. Something else to remember. Hillary has said several times that she wants to "TAX THE PROFITS" of the oil companies. That's all fine and good until you realize they will just pass it on to you, RAISING the price ever more. Show me one company that has not passed their taxes on to the customer though their prices.

they only way they will lower prices to a comfortable level is very large protest. right now they know everyone will just piss and moan then go about their merry way. they know that we will not sit home. will pay what ever the market price is just not to sit at home.

That's when demand goes up. Let me ask you something. Do you and your family go places and do more on a holiday than you normaly would on a regular day? Multiply that by 300+ million people across the US. Go ask any servece station if they don't sell more gas just before hoildays and durning the hoildays.
The thing is it will get much worst, I look to see $4.00 a gal before 2008 is over. 2010 we could be paying $5-6 a gal or more.

When the cost of materials goes up, they keep their margin the same and pass it on....because demand has not gone down one bit.
Once consumers start changing their buying habits to reflect their intolerance with high prices, they will cut into those profits. Till then, that is called capitalism. You want socialism, vote for Hillary.

Do you know who gets that money. Me, and people like me with a 401 k. Exxon does not have a bank account with 40 billion in it. They pass that money down to their investors. How can people not see this?

according to consumer report there were less people traveling in 07 than in 06 but there was an increase in people flying. to your question no, we dont go somewhere on all holidays. last year prices went up for memorial
weekend but they dropped it when labor day came around. i didnt say they did it for every holiday. i agree with you, it will be $4.00 or better
before the end of 08.
I'm not smart enough to debate economis, but as long as people buy it, they're going to raise it. I've said for some time that the economy can't continue on the present path. Expenses are rising much faster than income. I think something will give in the next ten years. I don't think it will be pretty either. But, as some on here have said, I'm just a dumb#*$.
However I point out, that when that time comes, and I think it will, "A country boy can survive" Hank Williams Jr. (esp. now that I have these elk)

Well heres some #s to show how much a 40000000000 dollars profit is.If they make this size profit for a 3 month period, it equals out to 131 dollars for every person in America.U.S. POPULATION AS OF TODAY IS 303,352,282.Now if they make this profit every quarter for a year WHICH WOULD EQUAL OUT TO 160 BILLION ,that is just about what our goverment is trying to get to the people OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY to spend to jumpstart us from falling into a reccession. They are cleaning our clocks,BULLS**T

For all you guys complaining about the oil companies, I have a suggestion for you. Go out and get yourself an electric car. You don't need gas anymore. They have several electric cars that can get you around town. Just boycot. Its that simple. But if you like your 4 wheel drive truck and your bass boat and you 4 wheeler and motorcycle, and you want to keep them then shut up. Its really all up to you. You can deciede enough is enough and not buy their product anymore, or you can pony up whatever they want. I can't believe some people can sit here and say its wrong for a company to make money. I personally think it is wrong for the guys making 30 dollars an hour building trucks at Ford. It's the reson I can't afford one, but you never here me complain about it.
You run your own business and I doubt you are asking for a pay cut. And I bet if it worked out that you could get a raise you would not turn it down. If so why are you asking the oil companies to do the same.
Get over it, if you don't want to use their product the buy an electric car............. HEATH

What I don't understand is gass was 2.76 then then next day it went to 2.99. Then just 3 days later it was back down to 2.77. There can not be this much volatility in the market. Each time the bump the prices up like thid for no reason they make millions and then it goes down just long enough to calm people down them boom back up again....they have us by the jewels

heath most of your comments i agree with but as for the comment that guys at ford making 30 dollars an hour maybe you should follow your own logic and get a job at Ford. you seem to think they make to much...
you say it is your own choice on fuel, its the same on jobs. I ve seen some of the working conditions those guys go thru down there, they are earnin there money!
