I thought I would share with you something that happened yesterday that had me pretty shock up.

Yesterday afternoon I traveled to a place of business to get something repaired. This gentleman runs a repair shop and it is located kinda away from everything with the exception in the same parking lot resides an ole abandoned gas station type store that has been closed for a few years. The gas pumps are gone etc. Just before I left I noticed a gentleman about 50 years old pull up to the old store and get out and try to go in. The door was obviously locked and the repairman told him they were out of business and had been closed for some time.

The gentleman stated he was lost and wanted to know if we could help him. We both stated we would try our best. We asked him where he wanted to go and his response was I am trying to get home. Kinda has us both puzzled a little but we said where do you live? Well, he said I don't know. We then asked him his name and he didn't know. At this point I was getting kinda nervous about the situation but about that time the guy started to tear up a little and said that he couldn't remember anything. He didn't know his name, where he lived, his wifes name, where he was, NOTHING. I could see the guy was obviously pretty torn up over the whole thing. We asked him if he had any identification and he said what is that? Well, we discovered he had a driver's license and then got his name and home address. We looked it up in the phone book real quick just to verify and get a home phone number. I dial it but nobody is home. He said he could get home if we would just give him directions. I said bud you are not going anywhere until we find somebody who knows you, where you live, etc. This guy had pictures in his wallet, I am sure of his family and had no clue who anybody was. I really felt sorry for the guy. I asked him if he had a cell phone or anything and he wasn't sure. We found a peice of paper in his wallet that had a couple phone numbers on it and we started calling them. We finally got a hold of someone who he worked with and they were going to call someone close by to come get him. In the mean time, I finally found his business card in his vehicle that told me his home phone and a cell phone number. For whatever reason, I called the cell number and thankfully his wife answered. I told her where he was and what was going on. She said she would be there in minutes to get him.

Shortly after hanging up the phone a couple guys he worked with showed up and said they were working together just down the road and had been all day. They said he seemed fine but he did not know them either. At this point, I started asking the guy questions how he felt. He said he felt fine but that he had a bad headache. I immediately called his wife back and told her we needed to get him to the doctor immediately. Within minutes she was there and they were on their way to the hospital.

Needless to say my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. The guy had experienced a light stroke and the effects had caused him to lose his memory. According to his wife who just called he is resting now and his memory is coming back.

Guys you just never know what is going to happen. I know from this experince I would personally challenge all of us to do a better job of having contact information, emergency phone numbers, blood type, etc with us at all times because you just never know when it might be needed and it could save your life.

In your wallet and cell phone keep this written:

I.C.E- In case of emergency

That acronym is understood by all emergency responders.

Have any and all perinent information recorded with it.

seems to be going around lexington. the plumber on the house we were working on had a heart attack in the driveway on sat. morning, builder got him in an ambulance and to the ER, he is going to be ok. buddies of ours were doing trim work on another new house in the neighboring subdivision last week. they were standing there talking to the painter when the dude just dropped his cup of coffee and slumped to the floor, eyes rolled back into his head. they called 911 and the ambulance got there shortly. seems his blood pressure had bottomed out. If either of these guys had been driving at the time it would have been desasterous. you never know.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ....she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

Good job Marty. I'm glad he met up with such a kind person. Many people would have blown him off.
