I haven't had these for 20 years or so. Man I used to love them with A1 sauce as a kid. I'm thinking of making a decent sandwich to try them again. I know they're terrible for ya, but one sandwich ain't gonna a kill me. Or maybe I'll make a lasagna out of them;), they have all different kind of recipes..

The wife picked up something like that a while back....The young son loves them, but I have yet to try them out. But I can tell you this, if you like a great Steak and Cheese sandwich, try the ones offered at Chedder's Rest. They come with steak fix to your taste, onions, mushrooms, and swiss cheese....plate of french fry's and different dipping sauces for the fry's..... I like to dip mine in mayo from time to time, but nothing better than Ranch dressing.

Back in the Navy that was one of my favorite lunchtime fares. I'd microwave some Steakums wrapped in paper towels and make sandwiches. They always seemed too messy to actually cook in a skillet.

When I was little, my mom would bring home something called shadow steaks from a meat processor. I'm not sure of the cut, but they were very thin cuts of steak--maybe 1/8 of an inch. Fried them up with some onions, sprinkle a little salt and pepper on them and serve on rye bread. I don't know that I was ever happier than when eating some of those sandwiches.

Didn't the movie "Sling Blade" tell us that potted meat had ears and peckers in it?

I don't know, but I do know the last time I read the ingredient label, it did include tripe. Tripe is stomach meat.

Don't potted meat have a lot of MSM, in it?

Mmmmmm.... stomach lining.

you know, some things, you just have to wonder who the first person was to look at it and say "I bet that disgusting chunk right there is pretty tasty".

Potted meat has a few unsavory ingredients in it.

Ingredient lists for several major brands:

Armour Star: Mechanically Separated Chicken, Beef Tripe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripe), Partially Defatted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendering_%28industrial%29) Cooked Beef Fatty Tissue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_fat), Beef Hearts, Water, Partially Defatted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendering_%28industrial%29) Cooked Pork Fatty Tissue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_fat), Salt. Less than 2 percent: Mustard, Natural flavorings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_flavor), Dried Garlic, Dextrose (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextrose), Sodium erythorbate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_erythorbate), Sodium Nitrite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_Nitrite).
Hormel: Beef Tripe, Mechanically Separated Chicken, Beef Hearts, Partially Defatted Cooked Beef Fatty tissue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatty_tissue), Meat Broth, Vinegar, Salt, Flavoring, Sugar, Sodium Nitrite.

"mechanically separated chicken..."

Sounds like something out of a Coyote/Roadrunner episode.

I've eaten my share of the stuff, but if you have to label it 'food product', then apparently its edibleness is somewhat in question. I mean, they don't have to print "Eat it! It's food!" on a can of pork n' beans.

If we can't readily recognize it as food, maybe we shouldn't be eating it.

I always picture somebody in a white jumpsuit, shower cap and safety goggles throwing whole chickens into a wood chipper when I see that. :D

Thats just what I thought, (MSM) mechanically separated meat,or (MRM),mechanically recovered meat,= mad cow in a can!

Concerns were brought about again when the BSE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_spongiform_encephalopathy) epidemic was discovered in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) in 1986. Since bits of the spinal cord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_cord) (the part most likely to be carrying BSE) and brain tissue often got mixed in with the rest of the meat, products using mechanically separated meat taken from the bodies of bovines were at higher risk for transmitting BSE to humans. As a result, in 1989 the United Kingdom tightened restrictions to help ensure that pieces of the spinal cord would not be present in mechanically separated meat taken from bovines

Partially defatted fatty tissue? Just what does that leave?

Well, I reckon if you take some fat out of the fatty tissue, you're left with...skinny tissue? Real appetizing, either way.

That reminds me of a joke...

Know how to tell if a man from Alabama has been at your house while you were at work?

1. There are beer cans in your front yard when you pull in.
2. Your dog is missing.
3. Your wife's bosom smells like potted meat!
:D

My Old man loved the stuff, but he was weird in his own way anyway. He would put mustard in Pinto Beans. Plus he could pull out some brown beans in the kettle and eat them cold right from the fridge......

He was raised in Hazard, KY. and ate lots of different stuff growing up.....

so I'm guessin steak-umms are a kind of food where you can actually feel your arteries being blocked? I have never even heard of it before this post

Steak-umms were highly advertised on TV and popular back in the 80's. I hadn't even thought of them since then before seeing this thread.

Ah Steak-umms... I used to eat the heck out of those as a kid. They were good but I'd have to be mighty hungry to stomach them now though. Same goes for potted meat, venia sausages and countless other "meat products"
I remember my dad would either have a can of potted meat or a can of sardines in his lunch box every day. It's really amazing he's still alive and kicking considering the crap he used to eat.
