Hi, I'm from Nelson Co. and I'm hunting three farms in the Southwest part of the county.
I hear the coyotes all over the place, but my two hunts thus far have not been productive. I've bought 3 types of calls. A hand held coyote howl/locater, a coyote pup in distress tape, and a hand held rabbit squealer that I'm afraid to use (sounds wrong).
So far I've tried the tape and howler call in the evening with no responses. The tape is dumb proof I guess, but the howl caller sounds odd to me and I'm not confident that I'm making the appropriate sound.
Any tips would be appreciated. the yotes around here are as thick as I've ever seen them in 15 yrs of hunting and they killed a neighbors dog recently. Also, I'm using a 7mm Ruger to hunt with. I'm not after the fur so is this gun ok, or is it just too big? Thanks in advance.

If your not after fur the gun doesn't matter. That one should only make a quarter sized hole anyway, not a big deal to sew up should you want one mounted.
It's hard to make a mouth blown squealer sound wrong to a coyote. Some fellows find the sounds I use to be unbelievable but the evidence usually runs over them in a hurry. As long as it sounds like it's in severe pain they will check it out.

Check out hte calling in the east forum for the thread sounds and tactics. It's the book on coyote hunting here in the east. These guy's will answer any questions you have. Jimmie

Jimmie,
A firend of mine already killed a Yote earlier this winter and shot the yote w/ the same gun set up I have. The hole it left in the exiting side of the dog was big enough for me to get both my fist into the dogs rib cage. I'm 6'2' so my hands aren't that small.
Just thought you would find it interesting.
Thanks so much for the tip.

Now ,which bullet was he using? A polymer tipped bullet or a standard spire point. I have used a 7mm-08 for years when shooting long range for the added oomph. The only mess I made was when I hit a joint in a leg and removed that member of the dogs anatomy. Everything else was a quarter sized hole.I called in one for a fellow using a 30-06 180 gr spirepoint. Quarter sized hole at twenty feet. That hide made a beautiful wall hanging.
It's the same thing in my 22-250. Depending on what bullet I can get a real mess or I can't even find the entry. I once used a 52 gr hp at 15 feet and had blood blow back onto me and a hole just like the one you describe except it was an entrance hole!!
The main thing is I would like for you to get out there and enjoy a sport that will definately get your blood to pumping ;-) Jimmie

Jimmie,
My interest in extremly high. I'm a junkie on this hunting stuff.
I just want to be effective with my calls to get the game into the kill zone.
Can't wait for more snow!

Hello all, new to the whole forum thing but the topics on here demand my attention!I also am new to activly hunting coyote's.I will be looking for tips on here and will listen to any advice.I do kinda have one question,i do have a 17 hmr but i would hate to shoot anything bigger than a groundhog with it ,a 22 mag same thing,i have a 30\30 , 35 rem, ect.all similarly short range.... but no small caliber high power rifle, and i have not heard anyone say a word about the .308...i have the rem 700 vls (varmint)which is what i am planning on using when i go, atleast until i choose which rifle to get especially for varminting.thanks for all help in advance
Greg
You never get the chance to shoot from the couch or the coffee shop.

The 22 mag is my absolute minimum. As for all the centerfires wk hunter mentions they are fine for getting your feet wet in this sport.Just use a standard spire point bullet if you don'yt want to tear them up bad.
I felt up a new ruger compact I liked a lot yesterday. It was in 243, a great little double duty gun it'self. Jimmie

hey varmit al's has what a call should sound like check it out. the 7 mm will knock them ass over tin cup but i would use something a little less potent."many people will take the hids" try setting up in diff. locations. watch the wind. and if the dog was a puddel or a rat dog it got wut it deserves lol.

i would use the 17 or the mag and take them in the neck or head sry i just hate seeing furs ruined. i shot a fox this year and i think it must have caught a branch because there was a hidge hole and the guts were hanging from a tree 10 yards from where it layed. that was with a 257 roberts but i have never gone wrong with my 243, 223, and also my 22 mag took 2 yotes last year when i was 12
