I have noticed on some guns there is a significant price increase for this feature on rifles. How important (if at all) is this? Obviously it cant hurt, but does it help significantly in your opinion?

Same reason guys put stickers on their trucks, or flames on their motorcycles.

It's just a cosmetic thing for the most part. Now I will admit, the camo does help keep a gun from rusting on the outside, but if a critter is checking out the wood grain on your rifle, he's close enough to kill.

Yeah, I agree. I like the way it looks and I like how you don't have rust problems with the laminate camo. But, I don't think its necessary in most situations. However, a fully camo shotgun is necessary when turkey hunting, IMO. I try to be completely camo from head to toe including gun. I'm not saying that you won't kill a turkey if your gun isn't camo, but I don't like to take a chance on the bird catching the gun sticking out.

I kill deer with shiny stainless rifles and pistols pretty much yearly.

That being said, I wouldn't have a duck hunting gun that wasn't camo.

Both the stainless and the camo I have simply to make them relatively maintenance free. I simply don't have to worry about rust.

Just ask lab how quickly a basic black shotgun can rust as compared to a camo one.

But as banded said, if he's close enough to see your gun.. he's close enough to be dead.
