I was thinking of getting a new muzzleloader for next year and was looking at the Thompson and the CVA ST. LOUIS HAWKEN .50 PERC. 28OCT.BBL. Do any of you own either and what kind of accuracy do you get>?

I have the T/C.. it is a fickle beast. Best groups come from roundballs with about 85 gr. of Pyrodex and the T/C maxihunters with 100 gr. of the same. I have downed deer out to 80 yards with open sights and the 100 gr. load. I never really shot it a whole lot off a bench or anything to see what it was capable of. It will not shoot anything saboted worth a hoot.
It is very very succeptible to complete accuracy loss because of fouling.... really horrible. I got to where when I sighted it in, I cleaned it after every shot so point of impact was for a completely clean barrel. Only way I could get it to be reliable for over about 3 shots. The old timers and others in the know told me the reliable accuracy wouldn't come into it until after a few hundred shots had been fired through it, which it will probably never see.
It is a beautiful gun though, I finished it myself from a kit. It's just a looker now, I currently hunt with an inline which is infinitely more reliable in the accuracy dept.
Straight powder.......

I have a T/C Hawken and have used it alot from the bench. The best performance i've had has been with T/C maxihunter, and Hornady Great Plains bullet in 350 and 385 grains respectively in front of 100 grns of pyrodex select. Accuracy has been 3.5"-4.5"@ 75yds. I have not been able to come close to this w sabots af any kind. I also have a T/C inline which i highly recomend. i have had good accuracy with all bullets except roundballs. For looks the Hawkens is tops, but for huntability the inline cant be beat. GREAT SHOOTING
