I want to customize a varmit rifle. I am really interested in the .204. I have researched it a bunch but I want to hear your opinions is anyone owns one or has shot one. Pros/cons...etc...Will it shoot with a 22-250?? Thanks for any input!

I handload for the 204 and shoot out of a Ruger #1. I love the round, accurate, fast as ****, and although I haven't shot a critter with it, the effects on water bottles out to 400 yds is fantastic.
Will it shoot with the 22-250??? not in the wind. The little bullets just don't have the BC to hang with the heavier .224 dia bullets. Of course you use 10 less grains of powder, so the barrel does not get hot very quickly.
Recoil is much less than the 22-250 and watching impact at 2-300 yds is fun.
You won't go wrong with the 204 or 22-250, either is an excellent choice.

I would probably go with the 22-250. I have never shot a .204, but I have heard a lot of people say that they are a little small for coyote sized game on up. I know there is a lot of debate on it, but why not get the 22-250 and be sure?

The person I hunt coyote's with uses one. We hunt together often. I have seen coyote's hit with it run off, they of course died, but I don't like to watch one run 100-200 yards then die. All were chest shot. I have never seen one drop to the shot. But none of the 5 were shot in the CNS (central nervous system).
Now, the 204 is he** on ground hogs, does the same as it does on water bottles. Just the hide won't tear like a water bottle does.
He now uses his 25-06 on coyote's, and saves the 204 for groung hogs.
His is very accurate, but in my opinion, just a tad to light for coyote's.
btw I use a .223, and when coyote's are shot in the chest, they drop and might kick alittle:)

Thanks Fellas....I am a big 22-250 fan anyway....I would like to get a .204 just to have one. Think I might just stick with the 22-250 for a custom built Varmit Rifle.

there is a magazine called the (small caliber news) that isn't very well known. It has a lot of good info on 20cal stuff. Those guys that write the articles has 20cal wildcats that out performe the 204 ruger.I you are into varmint sized calibers that would be a good mag to get for a year or two. They had a good article on the 17hmr about not being reliable on fox which I suspected even before I read it.

hmmm... just talked with a guy who loves his 204 on bobcats. I've been toying with getting one, didn't realize at 4400 fps it would have trouble on a coyote.

Word from some guy's that have already started hunting with thier custom rigs is to use the heaviest bullet possible in the 204. Light bullets are creating runners for them. I would hate to spend a few dollars for something that doesn't cut it in the field. They are not complaining about th accuracy of those custom AR's though. Accuracy is pretty impressive from targets I have seen. If your only targets were bobcat and fox this would be a great little cartridge.
No complaints about the 22-250 an dthe heavier vmax bullets either. More clean killls and not so much pelt damage from these bullets. Very few exits. I haven't had an exit with the 55 grain pill. Jimmie

I also have been looking at the 204 after reading several post here and other forums I think I will stick with the 22/250 for now.
I sure would like to have a new toy to play with but Will hold off for now.
The 22/250 5ogr.V Max does a great job on Yotes and Fox
NO runners

I am a huge browning fan but Browning only makes a varmit rifle with a madium-heavy barrel. What brand/model do you all recommend in a 22-250 cal
