View Full Version : .22 Bolt Action Advice
I have a .22 Ruger 10/22. It is about 37" long an suits the front of my Honda ATV well (brush, etc). I would like to buy a bolt action .22 similar in size for the same purpose. I want it to have the options of .22 lr, long, short, or rat shot. My 10/22 only handles lr rounds. Any suggestions? I prefer a clip or tube magazine instead of a single shot. Every option I've seen is longer. Of course the accuracy with the lr rounds is a concern. I like the look of the Henry "survival rifle" but they're all autos as I understand it. Trying to keep it within $200, new or used.
Any advice/comments appreciated.

The CZ Scout is a clip fed bolt that is short enough. My CZ Ultra will feed shorts wonderfully, so the Scout should too. It uses controlled feed, which means the cartridge is grabbed and held by the bolt as it is fed up and out of the clip. Most other rifles like the Ruger just shove it forward up a ramp toward the chamber and that's why shorts won't feed in them.

i use a henry lever youth. it goes on my atv, and don't lap over. i use it everyday training dogs. will shoot shorts, and is very acurate. i have several other 22 rifles, bolt and auto, but i reach for the henry most every time.
Trust Me,
Is that CZ Scout tapped for a scope if desired? Do you think the stock on the Scout is long enough for an adult? Overall is about 33" which is perfect, only if the stock isn't so short you can't shoot it. One other thing, are the triggers decent in the CZ's?
Trader Rob,
My nephew has the lever action Henry and loves it. I'm afraid that it's just a little too nice (if bought new) to use it like I need it. I agree, they are neat little guns. I just hate to put a gun that looks as nice as it does on the front of that Honda. I've heard no complaints on their accuracy. I assume they shoot a tight group?

I've never played with a Scout. But it's the same 452 action as the rest, so I assume it is ready for scoping. The triggers are adjustable; mine was fine out of the box. As for the length of pull, I can't say. You could slap a pad on the back to lengthen it if necessary.
I got some more info on the Scout. It is a 12" length of pull. I'm thinking that's too short for an adult. The pad addition you mentioned might be a solution.

jman, mine looked good at one time.lol they shoot well, i use mine to train squirrel dogs, have killed probably 30 with it. squirrels, not dogs, lol, i use open sights, handier that way, but i can shoot group size of a dime at about 20 steps.best thing, i messed up front sight, e-mailed henry, president of company replied, got new sight in the mail, no charge. tr
Trader Rob,
I know they're labeled as long rifle, but is there any reason you couldn't shoot a short in them?

Most lever actions will handle shorts, I bet the Henry will too. I know the Marlin 39 will run them fine.

That's a big 10-4! The Henry's will shoot shorts and are uncannily accurate to boot. Have both the youth and adult versions and with Russian manufacture match shorts, they are both tack drivers!
