Tell me about this native grass? I saw it at Salato today and it looks good. Just curious as to where to buy seed and cost of seed for a couple acres of ground on my farm. What other type woould be good for wildlife and how well will the native types compete with fescue if/when it tries to comeback? CSS probably told me this already but I have evidently forgotten.
Thanks,

Here is what I recall from days gone by. I believe it to be MUCH better for rabbits than quail(still too thick for young quail to manuever) I also think it really is a nice green color when most everything else has turned brown due to lack of water(like now). And hay harvest during these times it is supposed to be very productive. Hope that helps.

I think switchgrass is mainly used as cover not for a food source. I'm not sure about a source but would think that Steve McMillin at Yellowbank WMA might have some. I can get you his email if you need it. I probably shouldn't post it here though.

I bought about 25 or 26 lbs. of a seed mixture earlier this yr. but didnt get to seed it out because of weather conditions.I have it in cold storgage until next year.Switchgrass was one of the grasses in the mix.Got mine at Caudill Seed in Morehead. They can blend what you need.

Switchgrass is one of the cheaper native grasses. It can be very competitive and too thick for quail, but can be disked or sprayed to alow room for legumes, and movement of birds.. Seed costs are around $5.00 a pound for cave in rock variety and 3 or 4 lbs. per acre is plenty for wildlife. It provides excellent bedding cover for deer and all around "rabitatat". It is also a clean seed that can be drilled or broadcast with conventional equipment. Establish it in May and overseed with clover the following February. Switchgrass will keep fescue at bay if managed properly and prescribed burning.

Get all native grass, forb and wildflower seed from Sharp Brothers seed in Clinton Missori.I haven't found anybody to beat there prices and nobody will beat there service.
Switchgrass is easier to plant and a little cheaper than most other nwsg but indiangrass and big bluestem are better. They don't get to thick.
You will always have to fight the fescue.
