A friend of mine found a deer that had been covered with leaves and brush. It had also been dragged a pretty good ways. Would a bear do this?

Any kind of Big cat.
If nothing had been eating off it, more than likely it was a poacher.

Could be a big cat. Check out the new links I put on the big cat thread. I live in the KY TN VA border and cats are here. Bears are here too, but black bears rarely kill deer. Depends on the site for a poacher. Most poachers here don't work like that. They drag deer out and dont call them in.
Did it have bullet wounds or markings?

Mountain Lions will do that for sure, I didnt know bears would. Deer are also one of the Mountain Lions favorite foods! I used to live in an area with plenty of bears and mountain lions and I would find deer covered up on occasion. Sort of gave me the willies, especially if I was in for a long hike after dark.

Bigfoot has been known to cover his food up. Think maybe I saw it on the Animal channel.

I'm innocent, I tell ya! So what if a size 13 boot print was there. Lots of people wear 13's! I never even heard of Pine Mountain, anyway! You can't prove a thing!
Easy answer to your question is to see what type of wounds are on the animal.

Could be squirrels, they usually cover their food...usually its acorns but I haven't seen many acorns this year. Maybe the squirrels went carnivorous to survive??

Those are some pretty mean squirrels. I'd hate to run into a group of 5 or more squirrels. No telling what they would do. This is just another reason for being allowed to carry a side arm while bow hunting. Ha, HA, Ha

Had a squirrel jump on my blind this season...he just winked at me and I took it as a warning to stay away from his deer!

About 6 years ago I was living just outside of Somerset and found a dead button buck in a draw near my house. It was right after gun season had closed and i figured that it had been shot and not found. I looked it over as well as I could, without turning it over, for entry/exit holes and found none. The only thing out of the ordinary were bubbles coming out of the deers nose/mouth. A few days later I was in the same area crow hunting and thought I would check out the deer to see if the coyotes had got it. What I found was the deer completely covered over with leaves and pine needles and a section of the throat area had been eaten out. My first thought was big cat. I checked on it a couple of times over the next few weeks and more and more was eaten and always covered up. I would have loved to have had a game camera back then. I assume it was a bobcat.

I've been theorizing about carnivorous turks, Just seems funny to me that the turkey populations have began to thrive about the same time that the deer numbers are going down. If something was eating the deer, wouldnt it be eating the turkeys also ..... unless its the turkeys eating the deer, hmmm?

after a kill, a large cat will eat what it can and try to conceal the remains so it can eat again later. this is a technique large cats will use to avoid having the remains eaten by scavengers.

In hindsight, I remembered, I have covered up deer before.Drag them out close to the road and have to go get the truck. I was afraid someone would find it, and take it while I was gone.
The deer could have died from any numerous injuries or conditions. It is very common for a bob cat to stumble on a fresh kill and cover the body for later consumption.

Any preadator that could not eat the whole thing would cover it to try and conceal it from other preadators and scavengers.
