any 1911. i've owned two, eventually it will be three. five years ago i traded for a charles daly 1911 .45. pistol shot great. sold it for a significant profit. wife bought me a llama .45 1911 for christmas but already gave it to me. her dad had a Remington Rand 1911 and when he died it was left to her mom. it will be ours eventually. kind of like the excalibur of 1911's.

For small caliber you can't beat the Ruger hunter MKIII, I love mine! For the large semi-autos I second the 1911. For personal carry I use a para-Ordnance P12-45, for serious shooting I've got a Kimber gold match II. All of 'em are good pistols.

If you can get ahold of a Kimber or a Springfield 1911 both are really good guns. Have own and shot both. But pricie.

it's not a matter of her mom dying. her dad died like twenty years ago. her mom has no interest in firearms and is waiting until we have a gun safe to give her his collection. that did sound kind of bad.

those 1911's are pretty pricey from what iv'e seen. a lot of people swear by them though. as for the high point pistols, there was buddy of mine at work that was talking about them. i've never heard of them before but he was saying he was lookin at getting a high point 9mm for like $250. that is a cheap price for a pistol in my opinion.
what do you guys think of taurus pistols?

Well as far as the best.....I would have to say the best is what you can shoot.
I compete in firearms using a Glock 40 standard issue Model 22
For my off time I carry a Wilson Combat CQB only because I treated myself to a custom 45 ACP. The guns a expensive but if you shoot alot you will like the investment.

Carry a Glock 21 every day and stake my life on it. If it isn't a Glock it'll be a 1911!

Glocks for me too. I also like old Smith and Wessons, Colt revolvers, and for some weird reason 1911s have never done much for me. There isn't a best, its just what each person likes, imo.

I like a good S&W Combat Masterpiece (15) or a Combat Magnum (19) and I held on to my Distinguished Combat Magnum (587) for 22 years until I realized I hadn't shot it in forever and it might as well go to a good home. I've traded myself right out of all my revolvers. :(

Colt Combat Commander Enhanced .45acp, and a Glock 27 in .40 cal for the wifey
Love em both, but admit, for conceled carry, I'd take the Glock.

there is no way in he$$ Im trustin my life on a high point....never. Seen WAY to many of them with feed and jam problems. I own 2 springfields and would trust my life to them, dont own a glock, don't like them but they are very good guns, as well as s&w m&p and sigma and beretta92s .

Glock 19. I like mine so much I bought 2. :D
Small enough to carry, dependable, high capacity mags (you can use G17 mags also), dependable, accurate, and dependable.

The best handgun is the one that is available at the time of greatest need.
I'm partial to my S&W M66 round butt. Thank God, it's never fulfilled it's intended purpose, but I have no doubt that if it were called on to do so, it would get the job done nicely.

That's kind of an open ended question like asking what the best automobile is.
Do you need a 4x4 truck or an exotic sports car?
Different criteria means different answers.

I had a Colt Trooper in perfect condition pass through my hands about 6 months ago and have regretted not buying it ever since. A man really needs a good revolver, if for nothing else but to get it out of storage and admire it every once in a while.

I always said a man needed a good 357 revolver, a good 35 mm camera, a good pair of binoculars, and a good 22 rifle. The rest he could skimp on or make do without. I should have lived by my word, but the Colt 1911 had me distracted.:(

As quackrstakr stated, thats a WIDE OPEN question!! And I'm not getting into which one is the best, but I think each and everyone should own a quailty 22lr revolver, a 38 or 357 magnum and a 1911 .45 Auto. 22lr for plinking, the 38/357 for plinking/home defense and the 1911 to pay homage to Mr Browning for that design. just my .02

Smith & Wesson .44 magnum/3" or 4" barrel. I prefer revolvers over autos, I don't have to worry about stove pipes or ammo feed problems, plus I shoot way more accurately with a revolver. Fewer shots I know but if you can shoot pretty good how many shots do you need? Don't get me wrong though, I have several auotos but they are just for fun. When I hunt or carry concealed it is ALWAYS a wheelgun for piece of mind.

I really don't shoot pistols that often. Have an olde TC contender for deer hunting in a 30 30 barrel and a 410 for the occasional squirrel. BUT I had a wild hair this year to buy a semi. Looked at Glocks, Berretas and finally settled on a Springfield XD in 45. I can honestly say this is the first pistol I have taken out of the box and could hit something with:) I didn't like the angle on the Glocks in my hand. The XD fit and the price was right. I would recommend this gun to anybody.

I've fallen in love with my Berreta PX4-Storm in 40 cal.
I own a Sig 229, Glock 27, and 2 different 1911's in 45 ACP, this is now by far my favorite handgun to shoot. Fits my hand like a glove, shoots itself, and it doesn't break the bank at around $450 new if you shop around.
I had a Ruger Blackhawk, .41 mag that I bought new about 20 years ago for around $200. Big D A me let it go in a trade. Wished I had that pistol back.:(

Ive heard the HKs are pretty good sidearms, and very pricey to boot. The only handgun I've ever owned was a S&W model 59-2 in 9mm,nothing impressive but would have served its purpose. I've been thinking about the Ruger .357mag or the new Springfield XD 45acp

It all depends on what fits your hand and feels like it points right in your hand as you can tell by different responses...I love my xd45, I have the 4in compact. At 30ft I can usually put all 13 in a spot the size of a dip can. I just bought a SA G.I. 1911 Stainless, can't wait to put it to the test...I just can't seem to get away from 45s, although I am thinking about a 357 just to have

I'm a tested tried and true .357 fan a very bad disease,a die hard believer in Mr. Brownings 1911,but have an appreciation of things that go boom, boom, boom and that usually means i'm carrying a glock and yes its plastic:).

my .40 is the first pistol, after firing several times i think that i would like to go with a .45 next. my buddy has a Springfield in .45, it looks like a glock, but it has a compression safety on the back of the handle, which i do like.
i've been doin some hog huntin down here in fl, hopein to put my .40 to the test...
