I noticed this deer season that the front swivel on my rifle is just snug when its perpendicular to the barrel (the correct position). But its just right on the edge. If you barely nudge it in the other direction, its loose. But if I tighten it down tight, then its cocked about 45 degrees. Is there a shim or something I can get to fix this?

As for my second question, what's the advantage (or disadvantage) of a short action vs a long action in a rifle?

Put a white fiber washer on it...most of the time you get a few when you buy sling studs.

The long action is for longer cartiges, and has a slightly longer bolt throw during the cycle.

Also, the accuracy fanatics will swear that a short action is stiffer and less prone to flex and vibrate, giving more opportunity for accuracy, but not 1 in 1000 shooters would ever be able to tell the difference. I sure couldn't.

The MAIN advantage (that most will realize.....TM is correct that most won't be able to "shoot better).....is that a short action rifle is shorter (or has a longer barrel for the same Overall rifle length) so you can have a little lighter rifle or one with a longer barrel for close to the same weight... in say 7mm-08 than a .270 with nearly identical ballistics same with a .308 vs 30/06

I thought one advantage to a shorter action even though so slight was less time to reload the next shell and getting on the target quicker for a second shot. I know the difference would probably be very minimal so would that be an advantage?

Some folks feel the "shorter bolt throw " is an advantage......especially if they have trouble keeping a standard action shouldered when cycling the bolt, so that is another good point!
