Anyone know how I can find this out. I am thinking about taking some logs off my place and wanted to do it when the price was right. Is the market good for timbering right now?

The other day this topic came up on accident, basically I mentioned that lumber prices have been falling without anybody noticing, and somebody else said the guys who cut timber have been struggling so much that they are selling off logging equipment extremely cheap. Based off of that, I'd say prices are down alot, but that's all I have to base that statement off of.

Can anyone be more specific???

Say what is a log worth --

white oak 24" dia. x 9' long

popular 24" dia. x 9'

Slick bark hickory 24" x 9'

Red oak 24' x 9'

Maple 18-20" x 9

Any others that may have value?

The man that owns the land where I hunt has let a logger come in this fall (that's a sore subject) but I would suspect that there is money to be made or he wouldn't be doing it.

Try this.

lumber prices are VERY low right now.

WSPF #2&Btr is $5 below last year, OSB 7/16" Eastern is down C$20. Both are benchmark prices for other dimension and panel.

If you have potential for specialty products, or special species (not your standard SYP) then you may be able to get something for it.

However you would have to spend money to get it logged, delimbed and stacked for the mill to come and just pick it up. I'd say unless you have a sizable chunk of land, or a specialty item, now is not a good time to try to unload a bunch of timber.

The market is in a serious state of oversupply as it is.

a log is worth whatever lumber can be milled from it. Modern plants have computers that scan the log, looking for knots, check, kinks etc. then produce the maximum pieces of wood from it as possible. Some boards, some studs, maybe a 2x4 or two then a bunch of wee pieces that might be sent to a reman for fingerjointing.

Logs are generally sold by the truckload; the mill carts it away as one piece, then figures out all the details later.

the most recent thing they have is 1Q 2007. Prices may not have changed much since then . . . or they may not have updated their site. Either way, it's a good way to figure out what you could get

http://www.timbersource.com/stumpage.phtml

It's hovering at $27 - $35 per ton, depending on species.

I just put a new access road into the farm, cleared roughly an acre of land, had a logger come in and load up the trees I took out, sold them to a larger, local sawmill.1803 board feet, the mill paid $756.30 for that load. 13 white oak,$298.10, 1 hickory, $8.00, 8 red oak,$372.70, 1 maple,$18.60, 2 poplar, $ 58.90 ...hope this helps?

if it helps, a 24" dia X 9' long has 225 board feet. I would call the mill and see what they are paying for saw logs.
Barney's prices were about $.42 board/ft avg.

I should add the logger told me that the trees on an acre of woodland,on average are worth about $1000 dollars, less logging expenses. This held true on the timber I sold,I sold 2 loads off my estimated acre, 1 grade load $756.30 and 1 low grade load $345.22 =$1101.52

Me and my wife bought 6 acres in 2005 and sold the big timber off of it in 2006 and almost paid for the land with the timber.I think prices have come off somewhat but white oak,red oak and hickory are for sure the money makers. If you have any logs that they can use for veneer, even better.

Lumber prices are way down. For good logs. if you have logs that is good pallet mat. them is almost as much as good logs. That come from a guy here at a local saw mill.
