Yep if my grandsons AKO account where you can find out where the army has plans to send you next holds up...(they do change at times on a minutes notice) Nicholas will be headed to Ft Drum, Ny. Home of the 10th Mountian division. Report date Jan 18th, 2008. That means a great possability he will soon be paying a visit to the sand box soon as the 3 brigades there tend to rotate deployments. Just depends on what brigade he is assigned to and if they are deployed at this time and how long if so they have left over there. With the AKO account information having a possability of changes he will not be positive untill he recieves hard copy paper orders. Graduation date from his advanced training is Dec 13th so we may get some time with him at home before he heads out for the next step on his big adventure.

He is excited about going to Ft Drum as he has a friend he hung around here with before he left that is in the army and stationed at Ft Drum at this time.

After reading some information on the activitys they have available thru the moral department (read fun and games) I told the wife I would just move to near the fort and Nicholas and myself could have some great times on the weekends. Guided hunting and fishing trips up in the mountians, both static line and freefall parachuteing, Weekend trips to NASCAR races and New York city. A ton of differant things available for both summer and winter seasons.

The wife just gave me that strange look I get when she thinks I have gone off my rocker..:D

Depending on where you are, and who you talk too, MWR(morale/welfare/recreation) has really stepped up to the plate. There are still some FOB's that are lacking. My last deployment MWR brought over the Bengals cheerleaders, and I think the Lions cheerleaders. Now thats GOOD MWR there that is!:D

I've been up to Ft. Drum many times, and it is a GREAT base! Beautiful country, and plenty of killin and catchin opportunities for those that take the time to look. Skiing and snowmobiling are also popular about 11 1/2 months out of the year as well.

I chatted with a lady who lives near the fort. She said was not that long ago they had 12 ft of snow on the ground, I don't care where you from thats a lot of snow...:D . Thats OK Nick was born in Valpariso Indiana right in the snow belt of NW Indiana. Lake effect snow will not be a shock to him.

Ft. Drum is a great post a little cold in the winter when i was there it got down to -40 without wind chill but outdoor opp. abound. NYC is about 5 hours away, and Lake Placid is about 2 hours. Watertown is not a typical army town no strip bars or stuff like that in town. Wherever he goes tell him to get off post whenever he can it makes it alot better. Oh yeah tell him buy a flyrod great flyfishing all over.
