I'm interested in purchasing a spring/piston style air rifle for plinking and getting the grandson started in shooting. He is very timid around loud noise so this should be a good way to start him off. I've seen the Gamo Whisper advertised in mags and it is supposed to be quieter than the norm. Might be good for thinning out the cats in the neighborhood too. Any and all experiences and info appreciated.

RWS makes some nice spring piston rifles , but they ain't cheap! I keep an old Daisy 880 pump with a 4X scope for cats-errr-practice. To actually drop a cat , you're gonna need upwards of 700 fps with a .177 pellet , IMO.
trust me

For getting a young lad started, nothing beats a good old Red Ryder and some large, safe targets that give instant gratification. When he can hear a milk jug go "thunk" at 30 yards, he'll know he's on to something.

broncorckcrwlr,
Any particular reason you want a piston gun? Very few are easy enough for a young person to cock (although you don't say how young the grandson is). I recommend an Crosman 2250. It's CO2 powered. The kit (from compasseco.com) comes with scope and stock for around $85.
I've shot a lot of air rifles and enjoy Field Target and 10m competition.
Let us know how young he is and maybe some more ideas will come up.

MM

He is only 6 and I would have to cock it for him for sure but I wouldn't let him shoot it unsupervised for quite a while yet. He is way too irresponsible to turn loose with a slingshot much less a gun. It is actually for both of us. Him to get him used to shooting and me for the above mentioned. I have even thought of getting him a Daisy or something like I had as a kid but if they are still as inaccurate as they used to be I'm not sure that I want to. I have no experience with co2 powered air rifles. It just alway seemed a waste to buy the co2 thingys when you can just cock the gun yourself.

yup, thats what i found out too, CO2 is nice but disipates fast in cold weather.
look up Compassco or something like that on the internet. They are up in Bardstown and they are a retailer for Chinese Airguns. they have remanufactured stuff there to. Also there are tones of airgun forums on the internet.
good luck
Bill
I got a crossman 2100 Classic with a scope. Its a 10 pump, 700 fps, .177 pellets. I cut a couple of inches off the stock to fit my boys.
Ive had the gun for a few yrs., and It will put pellets in the same hole at 20 yds.
Last spring I bought a new pellet gun that shoots 1000 fps. The barrell breaks open to load it and pump it. It looked like a nice rifle came with a scope and other acc., but it would not group worth a darn.
In a vise at 10 yds I couldnt get the groups any tighter than 4 inches. It cost $125. I returned it to walmart and Ill stick with the other one till I find one thats accurate.
