Just wondering what the difference (besides bullet size) is between deer rifle calibers like 30-06, .308, .270, 30-30. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each caliber?

30-06, .308 and the .270 are all versions of the same case (brass). The .308 is similar to the 06 except that it's a shorter case, same head and same bullet diameter. Balistics are similar.
.270 is the same as a 30-06 necked down to a .27 caliber.
30-30 is a rimmed cartridge and the less powerful of the others, and shorter range. Factory ammo is loaded to lower pressures because it might be used in some very old rifles, mostly in lever actions with tube magazines.....hence they normally have flat nose bullets.

The 308 is basicly a shortened 30-06. And can be reloaded to near 30-06 energy and velocity using 150gr bullets. When you go to 180 grain bullets and heavier the 308 does not have the case capacity to keep up to the 30-06 energy and velocity.
The advantage to the 308 is that can fit in a more compact rifle.
The 270 is basicly a necked down 3006. The smaller diameter bullet allows it to shoot flatter than either the 30-30,3006 or 308. But again the 3006 can carry heavier bullets.
The 30-30 is a different animal, its a rimmed blunt nose round designed for lever action rifles. Its just a little under the 308 in power. However Hornady is making new ammo, with a polymer tip, which breathing new life into this round.
When hunting Deer in Ky all four are good selections. Its when you start talking elk that 3006 and 270 lead the pack.
just my opinion, I hope it helps.
