Anyone seeing anything in 52 this year? Past couple of years have been down. Top is extremely thick due to previous burns, so I expect area to improve. Any thoughts?

I know alot of people don't believe in MONSTER eight points but there is one there with at least a 20" spread and 10"-12" tines. I am retired military and will try to find out if it too late for me to sign up to bowhunt. If it is too late I'll post his location for every afternoon (1:00-3:00pm) last week.:D

If your retired military you don't need to sign up for bow hunting. Just go to Check Station and see what areas are open

The part across from the backside of area 89 is a big oak flat and should have plenty of deer in there this time of season. There should be a log road in there that runs back in there a mile or better, plenty of good spots for a youth along it.It's rarely if ever open for bow so they should be dealing with unpressured deer.

I'm a first time Bow hunter (first time hunting for deer ever) and decided to hunter area 6 of FT Knox. I have scouted this area once, and last Friday I went to hunt for deer. My question is how to find the best hunting spot in area 6. I have figured out that I need to be out there about 400 am, so I can be in the tree about 530 am. That will give me about one hour before sunrise. Last Friday I made allot of noise and I build up a sweet and I barely make the sunrise. I did not see any deer, and yes I used Scent-A-Way. What should I look for when selecting a hunter spot?

Don't know much about area 6 but this time of year if you can find a water source that deer are using would be good due to the heat. Also persimon trees are excellent right now. I got one last night in area 73, which was very small, eating persimons. Oak trees are good too if the acorns are falling. Make sure the tree you are in has good back cover too to try to hide any movement.

The backside of 6 (north side), up against private land has a good reputation because of the crops and trails coming from down Muldraugh Hill - Area 4. The front side, behind the tank, is good after it gets colder and/or after they mow the utility cut-through.

I hunted 73 this morning. I had a shot at a small doe following a spike buck at 8:05. I was in a blind the juncture of the dry creek beds in the north west part of the area. It was only 15 yards, but it was my first ever bow shot and I missed. I think it's a great spot (ingress/egress for the Wilson Rd grazing areas) but the mosquitos are pretty bad.

If you don't mind telling, where are the persimmon trees in 73?

Does anybody else know of any persimmons, muscadines, scupperdines or white oak acorn trees in Ft Knox hunting areas? I'll post GPS coordinates as I find them.

I was hunting accross from the sign for biv site #8. There is an old tank trail that goes down a small hill and there were about 4 trees all dropping fruit. Even watched a coon come in and eat some.

No additional requirements for bowhunters during the youth hunt. You won't be in the area with the guns, so no orange.

They are up to around 20 deer found with EHD.

The red oaks are dropping so no matter which area you're in, find red oak acorns for now. The white oaks are still hanging, just the wormy ones falling now. They've killed 36 deer as of Sunday, just 2 bucks.

Last night from 7:30 to 8:00 there was a large bachelor group including 2 (8-12 point 15+ spread) bucks grazing outside Wilson Gate. I could not assess the racks for sure because it was too dark.

I drove on post to try to get pics and then saw another large buck near the corner of Wilson and 7th Armor as well as numerous antlerless and spikes.

This morning I saw a spike at Bivouac Site 8 (Lincoln Cemetary Rd) in 77 across the road from 73 (which was not open) probably coming from the persimmon grove in 73.

The following areas open Mon and Today:
6 7 20 21 29 30 32 36 37 39 77 79
MON d d d d d d d d d d d d
WED d d d d d d d d d d d d
81 82 83 84 85 89 90 95 96 33 80
MON d d d d d d d d d d d
WED d d d d d d d d d s s
74 17 56
MON f s
WED d d d

d = bow deer
s = small game
f = full (deer bow)

Those of you bringing kids to youth hunt this weekend, need to listen closely. Bring tick spray, not generic OFF brand, but real tick spray! Permanone, Permithrin, etc... With temps near 90, they will be bad. Don't ruin your kids experience by getting them covered in deer ticks.

Good luck.

I'll be heading to Ft. Knox late Wednesday night. We were drawn for the weekend of the 20th and 21st. Is it a safe bet that we'll be able to hunt the Thursday and Friday before? How many hunters are there per area? There are three people in my group, it would be good if we could all stay together since we've never been to Knox before. Are the persimmons still falling up there?

Pay the $5 for the map. It's the best money you can spend. I've been studying the one my hunting partner bought.

Yes you will be able to hunt Thursday and Friday. There should be no reason for you not to get all of your people in one group. I am not sure what areas are available. They put a different number of people in each are depending on the size of the area.

They'll be enough areas open to hunt togather. If you're talking about staying togather, go to Camp Carlson and rent a cabin. It's cheap, nice cabins, and right there at post. As far as deer goes, find the oaks, and you'll find the deer. They are very cocentrated on acorns right now........

Sorry I offended rme hunter and Redlined. The area guide meeting is usually around muzzleloader weekend, which is this weekend. So the results are not always that late, at the end of the month. also, there was one question before me that was asked on the gun hunt, October 10th- not the 3-4 times you said. Sorry I missed that. I asked a question that many people out there are thinking about. Thanks for the help on the date, but you do not need to be an A-Hole about it. If you cannot help it, then don't reply.

The area guide meeting is next week on Tuesday or Wednesday (I'd have to look at the letter). The hunter information will be mailed out the following day by Hunt Control and should arrive to everyone by the middle of the next week.

A little friendly advice:

Understand that your area guide will probably be in the woods hunting deer in the state on the weekends and evenings prior to and even throughout the Fort Knox season. So do not try to contact them on the weekends or before dark during the week and then get aggrevated if they are not available. Also, the purpose of checking in by phone is to be informed of the meeting place. We check you in formally on the day of the hunt. One person in the party can call for the whole party so not everyone has to call into the guide. In addition, most of us area guides have probably not been in our hunting areas since December of 06 therefore when we have little information to give you on the deer in the area we aren't being tight lipped, we honestly don't know. Oh and our wives usually don't have a clue of what is going on with any of it so its best to leave a message and talk to us personally.:D

This morning, I saw some big does grazing near the Wilson gate and also crossing Wilson toward Anderson from 72. In last couple weeks, I've seen many deer crossing the first little rise on 7th Armor from 73 to 72. There is a trail there, going towards some cedar thickets in 72. One big buck was there about 2 weeks ago. Don't lose heart. Wherever there are does, there will be bucks soon.

I hunted 73 yesterday afternoon and this morning, I saw nothing but I got some vocal responses last night.

I got my first bow kill, a button, in 13 two weeks ago, that area is hot when it's open.

The area guide meeting was last night so paperwork should be mailed out today from hunt control.

For any of you that have gotten drawn, please, please read every line of information in that packet. On the morning of your hunt you will be bound by the regs in that packet and area guides will have to abide by those regs as well. I do not want to see anyone not get to enjoy a good hunt by forgeting things such as: not having your gun in a case that can be completely closed, not having your state license and deer tag in your possession, not having a hunter safety card, or bringing the wrong type of firearm. I have seen guys in the past make these mistakes and get turned away on the first day. Understand that as area guides we can not give anyone a mulligan, if we do it is our job that is on the line. Also, while you're on the reservation, if you do not know or understand something, just ask. If the area guide doesn't know we will get with Hunt Control or the Game Warden and find out for you.

Congrats to all that get drawn and if you are in area 59, I'll be looking forward to meeting you.

Thanks,

R.R.

Oh and our wives usually don't have a clue of what is going on with any of it so its best to leave a message and talk to us personally.:D

Picked my packet up at hunt control today. Hopefully the action starts to pick up a little bit. I've bow hunted several times this year, but the deer movement just isn't the same as past years. If anybody is planning on bow hunting on Ft Knox the next couple of days, be advised there are not many areas to choose from. The areas that are open have been open almost every day of the season. Must be alot of training going on now.

WhiteR-- I like the area over looking the RR tracks near the edge of the area on the NW side. There's a firebreak along there and the tracks are below that with some land in between. There's a road back into a building with a antennea next to it that will get you close or the last road before you go down the hill to the Tresstle. BTW--

Dennis-- I've got an 8 pointer coming into some corn and a few acorns on my property, so hunt close to it. The buck will go at least 135 or so if that's big enough for you. There's a sink hole on both sides of a tank road coming from my back corner that should produce a deer or two.

Feedman-- contact Dipits, he's guide down your way and maybe able to help you out.

Follow the road out past the radio tower to where the fire break starts. If you head down the firebreak a 1/4 mile or so theres some tank roads that head off into some thick brush. There's usually a lot of buck sign off those little roads. Also might want to check out the swampy/drain type low area in the center of the area.

I've hunted turkey's in 81 quite a bit. I've seen a good bit of buck sign in there too.I'd try to hunt somewhere you can see down into some thicker cover where the deer sign is fairly abundunt. I personally like the area up near the south boundry gate. It's prob. better suited to hunt off the ground where you can see "under" the brush up that way though. Also check out the hardwoods areas in the front up close to where it meets 80.

When you are taken into the area, you'll enter past the ammo dump and that road will intersect at water plant road.Turn right at the water plant and about 1/2 mile down on the left you'll see the water tower.About 300 yds further down on the left the firebreak starts, park there and head in.

Head way back in on the log road off Chappel Ridge road.Find some sign and set up.You're hunting the first weekend, so I doubt the deer have been pressured as that area is hardly ever open for bow. You've got a good area very capable of giving up a whopper. Should be plenty of acorns on those log roads and they branch off and run way, way, back......

I've hunted 21 before. good potential for a nice buck. right hand side of road going in is always closed to bow (left hand is sometimes open). Walk down edge of the range until you come to a cut lane on the left....seems like there might be a cemetary there...... and enter the woods to your left. I hunted about 100 yards in and saw over 30 deer in 2 days. Everyone else drove down to the river and came up the draws. Good luck.

I've hunted 58 a couple times. If 57 is 1/2 as good as 58 I'd miss opening weekend for it. Best I remember 57 (possible 59?) had some dandy's killed on it in 01,02. I haven't been in these parts since then.

57's a good area, def worth missing the second weekend of state gun to hunt the first weekend.I've hunted it a few times, but it was early season and very thick, best I remember there are some food plots on the top with quite a bit of thicket up there.I'd try getting up a tree over one of those big briar patches where you can see down in it.Letting others push deer past you is a great tactic for any area at Knox.

I'd head to the log road that runs around the area and hunt a drain coming off the hills. Deer will be getting pushed from the top of your area as well as Chappel Ridge.Usually plenty of buck sign along that road through the bottoms anyway.Just watch the boundries as in most places down there the log road serves as a lot, if not all of the bottom boundry.

Head down the back hollar and hunt the point between hollars on the edge of the impact. Make sure you stay in your area.Loads of deer funnel through there. One bit of advice to consider though. That is not the place to go and shoot a so-so buck or doe, very long, hard drag that will take most of a day.If you just want a deer, try the oak ridges on top, they snake around for miles and plenty of terrain features to funnel deer.

Nine is decent, hunt the cedar thicket off of Pinwheel Road over looking the flat along Otter Creek. There's an old tank road crossing the creek in the spot if you get to scout, hunt on it or just off of it. The key is to sit all day in a stand, and hope the others work the sink holes and thickets on the other side of the road or in 11 for you.

Got drawn for area 48...should be a good hunt.

We were drawn for 48 3 or 4 years ago --- the area guides aren't the best. They were very tight lipped on the boundaries. One of the assistants tagged a deer for one of the other guides --- it was a small 6 pointer that measured 12.5 inches. He got lucky. This was the first year the 12 inch rule was in effect. I killed 2 does, and my buddy killed a nice 8 pointer. It rained the whole time. Saw a bunch of deer, and 5 river otters walking thru the woods.

We hunted area 1 last year and it stunk --- one doe killed all weekend. I saw 1 deer. Problem is, we got area 1 again this year, on dEC. 8 AND 9. Not sure if we're going to go, but I don't think it has been open for bow, so it might be worthwhile. But what are the odds of getting the same area 2 years in a row? This happened to us 6 years ago when we got area 16 2 years in a row --- and that year a lot of the same civilian hunters from the year before were with us. So do they really do a lottery draw? Or at a certain point do they just go with what they had the year before? Just seems odd to me.

I like REDLINED's advice. I hunted the bottoms very near where
he described and saw about 20 deer before 9 am. I shot a dandy 5 1/2 year old 8 pointer. Back then you could drive around to the bottoms. I don't think u can do that any more (ask the guides), so getting a deer out of there would be a chore. I would agree it would take all day to get a deer out of there if you can't drive it. Last year we had area 1 for the second hunt, and this year we have the last weekend --- interesting. Was area 2 any good? Looks very steep.

I did manage to kill a nice 9 pointer the first morning. Other than that it was slow for our group of 4 hunters. I was the only one to harvest anything.

Don't know much about 1 but I do know that one out of two big bucks, taken by bow this past weekend, was out of Area 1. God Bless!

Does anybody have any information on Area 9? We will be there Nov. 24 and 25. Any details would be greatly appreciated!

The only Area I have hunted is 112, and it was a good area. Lots of deer activity in that area last year.

Pros - Otter Creek, Lots of big tracks last spring (great turkey area!), saw deer in the creek bottom, never open during bow.

Cons - Lots of training goes on there, lots of soldiers and vehicles driving around, lots of blank ammo fire (could play in your favor if the deer are desensitized.)

Head way back in on the log road off Chappel Ridge road.Find some sign and set up.You're hunting the first weekend, so I doubt the deer have been pressured as that area is hardly ever open for bow. You've got a good area very capable of giving up a whopper. Should be plenty of acorns on those log roads and they branch off and run way, way, back......
thanks of the info!

Both areas are basicly on the ridge between Yano and Cedar Creek tank ranges, there are a few finger ridges also but you get the idea.88 does get a little bow hunting, no more than a few days per season, 87 gets even less. That being said both have plenty of big deer in them.Lots of thick cover and terrain features to funnel deer.I'd find an edge where open hardwoods meet thick cover in close proximity to a drain coming off the sides of the hill. Spend some time looking and when you find a spot stay put, the big deer are there but you got to lay with it.Knox bucks are notorious for moving at midday hours when most are napping or back at the truck talking..........

58 is another big deer area.Since your going the last weekend I'd concetrate on the creek bottoms in a place I could look down into heavy cover.A lot of 58 is mature, wide open hardwoods. Not really a place to see deer after two weekends of hunting.

Don't be disheartened by getting a last weekend draw.Last season there were a whole lot of big deer taken the last weekend. On the second weekend it was very warm, by the third weekend it was bitter cold. The weather plays a huge role in how good or bad a particular weekend will pan out, for hunting pressure as well as deer movement............

Well I got the 46 the last weekend. Any advice?

In the back of the area there are some old poplar flats that have been dozed and planted to clover. If they are still up there, hunt the thickets around them.If they've gone back to weeds try the ravines coming out of the bottoms.

Been years. Killed deer high on the south side of the 2nd knob and have killed deer near the river. If I hunted there today, I'd head back to the river and hunt there, the hill will be over run with hunters before too long.

I'd try south of the 1 in the number 112 for starters???

Last season, we killed more deer the 3rd weekend than any of the others. Like Redlined said, the weather dictates the quality of the hunt more than anything else. Hunting pressure is different every weekend as well, so it's a crap shoot as to where to go.

My advice for gun hunting Knox, get close to thick cover, and stay all day. Half the hunters clear at noon on the first day. I'll guarantee you can't kill one at the house.

36 is steep. Tops are heavily wooded ridges with some spotty acorns this year. Hunted there several weeks ago and didn't see a deer on top. I like the bottoms during the gun hunt. There are some pretty thick areas and 45 is across the road which is very thick. 45 has been off limits to bowhunters for years and holds tons of deer (or at least used to). lots of deer are pushed across the road into 36 and 37 once the shooting starts. I'd hunt low on the point between the 2 big hollars first morning and stay all day.

Thought this one was already answered. Nine is best along the creek in the flat part. There's a steep hill side on both sides that deer won't climb unless really pushed hard, so hunt on either side of it. The area is easy to see on the map. The key is to sit or stand hunt all day and hope the bulk of the party rabbit hunts the sink holes above you, either in 9 or in 11. If they do, the deer will flip back and forth across the creek.

I would use a stand, you'll be able to hunt all day that way?

As for left or right, depends on which way your traveling on Pinwheel at the time, but from your clipboard area, it will be on the left(Otter Creek side of the area).

Go to topozone.com and use these: 37° 54' 41"N, 86° 01' 46"W

The cedar thicket is here, 37° 54' 28"N, 86° 01' 51"W but there is a no hunting zone around the lake and camp ground.

The frontside of the big hollar has a gravel road that runs down to the firebreak, about halfway down is a log road on the right.Out it a couple hundred yards is a good edge where thick woods meets open oaks, try it.Also try the thicket at the beginning of the gravel road on the right, theres a troop trail that goes in a little ways, just branch off it into the cover.

My uncle used to be a guide. I've hunted with him several times. Most hunters walk from one end to the other and jump deer out of the sinkholes. There have been a few good bucks killed there over the years but it's not a great area (my opinion). Find a spot and stay put all day if u can and you should see deer. I always had the best luck across the road (Logsdon I think, the 4 lane). Park at one of the gates and walk back. A very thick stand of pines always had good buck sign. Good luck.
