The Winchester Model 70 short rifle was manufactured from 1936 until 1946. The factory never referred to it as a "carbine." This is a very scarce and desirable variation and, as such, is often created from a regular rifle by unscrupulous dealers. The 20-inch variation has a front sight that is integrally forged with the barrel. A request to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center might produce results, but records from WWII can be problematic. Your rifle was made in 1945, but Winchester records rarely if ever give owner information, even in the case of presentations. Membership in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center is a must for Winchester collectors. The .270 is one of the most common calibers that these short rifles came in. Assuming your rifle is all original with no extra scope-mounting holes (a disaster), crisp with 85 to 90 percent of the original finish, it could be worth as much as $3,000 to a lover of Model 70s.
This is a reprint from Guns and Ammo magazine. Hope it helps. Dennis

Winchester did make a standard grade and a super grade model 70 featherweight in a carbine. PM me the s/n and I will see if I can get more info for you. A pic would help as well in determining what you have.--Mike

Has it got the schnabel fore end? I remember those being advertised way back when. That's one of the first guns produced by the new United States Repeating Arms Co., the one that just died a year or so ago.

it has no features at all at the end ,it just narrows down to a small round for end that is smooth and round and it gets smaller at the end to were it kinda flows with the barrel.:)

The "G" prefix serial # tells you that it is post 1981. That said, USRAC introduced a model 70 lightweight carbine in 1984 in both long and short actions. They introduced the model 70 Ranger carbine in 1985. Winchester had a pre '64 m-70 featherweight carbine as well that I would love to find one of just laying around in good shape.
The Ranger version was a lower priced model, I believe with stained birch stock and without a hinged floorplate.---Mike
