I just use am old HP 305 I bought from walmart. I take it into the field with me, and if I happen to destroy it, I am not out much.

Look for some used DSLRs or a good point and shoot camera. Try to get somthing with some type of manual controls. My wife has a real thin point and shoot digital and I hate the thing. I guess I am just use to the Nikon D80.

got my wife a d40x for her birthday a couple of months ago and she loves it. if you can't afford it now save for it. better than buying a camera only to have to upgrade it a year later. i know want her to upgrade so i can have the sucker.

I have a Olympus Stylus 720 SW. It is shockproof and waterproof to a depth of 10 feet. I take it everywhere even in the rain. Have had it in saltwater environments mutliple times no problems. I take it hunting, fishing, everywhere. It fits in my pocket, is light weight and it takes a really good picture. I blow up alot of them to 8X10 and I am amazed at the level of detail and the crisp clear image I get.
The newest Stylus is a 790? I think? and it is shockproof, crushproof, waterproof to an even greater depth and the battery will operate at temperatures down to 18F. It is kick butt. And I think you can get one bought with some memory for about $300.
Main thing is to be honest with yourself. Is photography going to be a hobby of yours? or do you just want some good shots of good times with a go anywhere camera?
Check out www.Steves-digicams.com (http://www.Steves-digicams.com) He has some good reviews.

I've got a Nikon D70 I bought a few years back. It does more than I will ever be able to do. Prices should have come WAY down on a used D70 since the D70s, D40, and D80 are out now.
Save your money and get a used one or save longer and get a shiney new D2X

I bought a Canon Elan IIe 35mm about 5 minutes before the digital revolution. I just picked up a Rebel XTi since we have our first child due in March. I thought it was a good excuse for the purchase.:D BTW, murphys camera has them on sale for $550. body only. That's a good deal if anyones looking.

My Nikon Coolpix takes excellent pictures, they are very reasonable priced. It all depends on what you are going to do with it. I have lots of pictures on my web page that I took with mine. www.musiconthestreet.com

It's around that for just the camera body. A friends dad has one. It takes great pics but the file size is pretty large. :D
