Be careful out there this week. Insurance data shows that of the millions of people that will fry their turkeys this year 15 will set their house on fire. Fifty seven will set their garage on fire and another 378 will set their patios on fire.

Don't be one of them.

Don't let your brother-in-law or third cousin watch the fryer while you go inside to get another beer, trust them to get a beer for you. A beer lost to them is much cheaper than a house.

A family near here lost a detached garage and contents (ATV, tools, etc.) to a fire caused by a turkey fryer. First time they used it, put too much oil in, and when it boiled over the grease flashed just like gasoline.

Keep the fryers well away from any structures and be sure to follow the instructions on the oil volume in the fryer. DON'T throw water on a grease fire; an ABC extinguisher will slow it down, possibly put it out. Covering the pot with a metal lid will smother the flames, if you can do it safely, without burning your hands and arms.

Deep fried turkeys sure are good, but the fryers must be kept away from the house.

We fry ours in the driveway, a good 50 yds from the house and away from the trees. If it is really cold, which it doesn't look like it is going to be, we beat the cold with some good brews to warm things up.

Char-Broil has a new oil-less turkey fryer that is supposed to work really well. It uses infra-red technology and is much safer. I'm thinking of getting one of those things!

Wonder how that would work - injecting them and rubbing them down with seasonings???
