I let my 6 yr old son shoot my 17 HMR this afternoon at 50 yrds using a bipod. Would you take him deer hunting during the free youth weekend? I do want you to know all I did was flip the safety for him. He will be using a 223 during the hunt>http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd218/PLLSSMITH/07.jpg

could probably take one down...just guide him through it really good and calm him down when he takes the shot

If you don't think shooting like that qualifies for hunting, please don't ever watch me target shoot.:)
Looks like as long as he doesn't get a bad case of "The Fever", he should be just fine.

I would take him if he couldnt hit a barn! Kids are the only future we have,if he wants to go, take him!!:)

I agree with barney. Who cares if he doesn't fire the first shot, just get him in the woods. enjoy your time together while you have it.

take him already!!!!! he doesn't even need a gun to go have a good time. tell him nice shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son has been going to camp with me since he was 4. He would stay in camp with Papaw and kick around or poke in the fire while I was bow hunting. He went to the tree stand with me for the first time just after turning 7 and killed his first deer the next year at 8.
Here he is at 7. It was his first trip to the stand and I killed a 10 with my pistol. He loved it and still does.

I believe your boy will make a fine shot, but you should take him out and let him shoot the .223 a few times too.

Paul i already told you today at work that he can kill one with shooting like that if you keep him calm.It is like some others told you.It is not always about the kill but the good times and memories you all will share. My boys killed their first at 7 and 8.I started taking them at 7 because that is when i felt like they were ready. They both just love being in the woods and enjoying us spending time together.
