TOWN OF SAXEVILLE, Wis. — A grandfather fatally shot his 18-year-old grandson in northwestern Waushara County during the opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer-hunting season, a warden says.

David R. Ruck from the Saxeville area died at a Neenah hospital after he was shot Sunday morning, Sheriff David R. Peterson said.

"My heart goes out to the family and to the community," said Tim Lawhern, conservation warden and state director of the Hunter Education Administration.

Deputies responded to a report about 8:40 a.m. that a hunter had been shot on private property in the town of Saxeville.

Ruck had been shot in the upper leg and inner groin, Peterson said, adding that the shooter said he mistook Ruck for a deer.

The sheriff's department and state Department of Natural Resources were investigating.

The gun deer season opened Saturday, with an estimated 630,000 hunters participating.

No statewide deer kill figures were reported Sunday.

Taken from the Wiconsin Dept website:

"General Deer Hunting Regulations
Blaze orange clothing Requirements
In any area of the state where a firearm deer season is open (including the regular 9-
day hunt, muzzleloader season, October 6–7 Youth Hunt, December 4-day antlerless
only hunt, or CWD hunts), no person may hunt any game, except waterfowl, unless
at least 50% of the person’s outer clothing above the waist is colored blaze orange.
A hat, if worn, must be at least 50% blaze orange. Faded or stained blaze orange
clothing is unsafe and may not meet law requirements. Camo-blaze that is 50% blaze
orange is legal, but is not as visible as solid blaze clothing. 100% solid blaze orange
is recommended. Note: Blaze orange requirements do not apply to those hunters
participating in legal night hunting (i.e. raccoon) from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour
before sunrise."

well said, where was the orange! what are the laws there on orange?????????? I grouse hunted up there when they had a youth hunt the first or second weekend in Oct. The hunting regs clearly stated that ALL hunters must wear blaze orange during that weekend. Some of those places are so thick that me and my hunting partner yell back and forth at each other at 20 yards cause you can't see the orange on our hunting coats, or our hats.
