Well...had a scenario that I have been bummed out about. I seen a nice buck about 100yds away Sat morning. However, he was on the other side of the river. I didnt have permission to hunt or track deer on the property, not mention shooting across the river is illegal. The buck was probably low 140..not a shooter until he turned sideways and his back quarter was comepletely bloody. I didnt even know he was injured and I watched him run normal for about 200yds down the sandbar. He got perpindicular from where I was sitting across the river (oh, full scentlock on and he ironically stopped right where the wind was blowing:cool:) ...he turned around and he had clearly been shot in the back quarter. I was sitting there with a 100yd shot.....wide open, but couldnt becuase its illegal to shoot across the water. I feel bad because the deer was wounded and needed to be put down, but I dont think the wound was life threatening until infection sits in. So as I sit here and rationalize my decision based on legal issues, trespassing, etc...I think I made the correct call..but ethically I slipped up.

He very well may survive, they are tough animals.

Commend you on the call you made. As far as infection is considered, not as bad an issue during the colder months. Whitetails are tough critters and he may very well live to see another season.

I agree...but just hate to see that happen. I am sure it was dodging lead as it was running...something about opening day of shotgun season in Indiana just irks me...I mean, when a person can fire 3 shotgun blasts as fast as an automatic I am sure precision was in the equation.

Lyman, your post tells me alot about you. It is obvious you have great respect for the animals we pursue and hate to see them suffer.
Deer are very tough as others have said and he may live a few more years. With the cool weather maybe infection won't get a handle on him. Just hope for the best!

Ethics and legality don't alway coincide.

I believe you made the correct choice, ethiclly, not to shoot. I would almost bet that deer will survive, being as how he was up and getting around without trouble. Deer heal very easily and quickly, and they will recover from injuries that may look quite serious. Personally, I wouldn't "put him out of his misery" unless he was obviously not going to make it, but that's a judgement call.:)

You done right. But man 140 not a shooter? I wish I had deer around here big enough to pass a 140:D. But anyways I would have done the same.

might be a good opputunity to talk to that landowner and tell him what you had seen .If he is very ethical himself he might just give you some rights on his land you know what i mean;)
