I am going to let one of my boys have my old reliable Rem 700 in 270 with a 3x9x40 redfield. I have had the gun since new, about 15 years. So, I need to buy a replacement. I have no problem with the Rem 700. It is black syn. on matte blued barrel. I am thinking my new gun should be syn and SS open to options. I like the .270 but am open, one day I hope to draw an elk tag. The 150 grain 270 should take an elk. I only weigh 155 lbs so I don't want an elephant gun!!! What is a good gun for hunting? What about a scope? Looking for people recommending what they have and why. I can budget up to $1500 for the pair.
Thanks
James

Just my opinion, but I don't much care for shiny stainless rifles... I have a Remington 700 ADL with black matte finish and black synthetic stock in 7MM Rem. Mag. topped with a matte black Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with Butler Creek covers on it (I love these BC covers).
I think the 7MM Rem. Mag. is a perfect round for deer/elk size game... Recoil is not nearly as harsh as some of the larger caliber rounds (Comparable to a 3" magnum in a 12 gauge, imo) and the Winchester Supreme 150gr Ballistic Silvertips I use sure do a number on whitetails.
The combo I listed above suits me great, and should I ever get lucky and draw an elk tag I will use the same gun.

I suggest a tikka t3 hunter in a 300 win MAG. I got mine before rifle season and it has performed Great.. I only weigh 170lbs..when your out there with a big buck in the cross hairs you wont worry to much about the gun kicking, and its truly one of the best shooting guns ive ever owned. I know where you can get a t3 hunter 300 win mag with blued barrel and wood stock for $530..(hit me with a pm) didnt know if i was allowed to post the gun shop name.

I like your taste in rifles as I am a Remington man myself.
I own one in stainless/synthetic and I am happy with it, the only draw back to a synthetic stock is when you get in to the bigger calibers the recoil can be harsh.
I recommend 270, 3006 or 7mm rem mag for deer and elk. If you take the elk out of the equation both 308 and 7mm-08 are fine cartridges.
I have two 700 BDL's one in 3006 and the other in 7mm rem mag. I have found the 7mm doesn’t kick any more than the 3006 but the 7mm has a 2" longer barrel and a recoil pad.
You can go the short mag or ultra mag route if you want but the ammo is two to three times higher and I doubt you could walk into Wal-Mart and find it.
For a scope I recommend Zeiss Conquest, in my opinion it has the clearest lenses and a 3x9x40 can be found for around $400. If you want something in the $200 range I recommend; 1. Nikon Buckmaster, 2. Bushnell Elite 3200, 3. Burris Full field II
Just my opinions and I hope it helps. Let us know what you get and good luck!

Here is my gun hunting setup. I have a Remington 700 7mm magnum BDL Custom Deluxe rifle, high gloss walnut finish. I put a New Leupold VX-3 3.5x10x50 black gloss finish scope duplex recticle. It is mounted on a 2-piece leupold dual dovetail bases and high rings. Rifle cost new is $600.00, Scope cost new is $549.00, rings and bases cost new is $50.00, and then put a nice leather sling on it for under $50.00 and then buy some gun chaps camo in color for under $50.00, so for around $1,300.00 you can set up a brand new everything for your setup that you will be proud of and works perfectly together.. you can't go wrong with this setup...and for ammo shoot only the Federal Premium brand 7mm ammo. I shoot a 150 grain boat tail soft point (BTSP)...

Thanks,
I am going to Gander Mtn and Bass Pro before x-mas to look some guns and scopes over. I need to buy a cheap stock for my current Rem 700 to cut down for my boys. When they get older I will put the factory stock back on. Where is a good place to find a cheap replacement stock?
Thanks,
James

I've got a Ruger M77 MarkII in .270 that is SS/Synthetic with a Simmons Whitetail Classic scope. Great gun. The stainless has never spooked a deer off either.
