I had a buddy that was deer hunting with me this past weekend. He had a yearling doe run within five yards of him because a coyote was chasing her. He ended up shooting the large 40lb male coyote that morning.
Later on that night, we heard a coyote that howled (different kind of cry than I have ever heard before) for almost two hours straight close to where he had shot the first one. The cries came at about 20 to 30 second intervals. We kind of figured that it might a howl for a lost mate.
Has anyone else heard a coyote howl that long continously? Do coyotes mate for life? It was odd to hear it carry on for so long. I hope to have him in front of my 25-.06 this coming weekend.:D

Wrong Rob, they do mate for life just as do wolves. The pair stay's together and raise the pups as a pair, with the male taking care of the female the first few weeks of whelping. As the pair gets older and have more litters one or more of te young females stay's with them to assist in raising the next litter. Helping to bring food to the female and young. I call her the nurse maid for lack of a better term.

Breeding season begins about the 3rd week in January and continures until about the 3rd week in February. Young breeding age females start looking for their mate in december. She will go through the area giving a female invitation howl about every five minutes, giving a savvy hunter an oportunity to get out ahead of her as she is moving around.

So yes Spit and drum you did hear the lost mate howls. It is a gosh awful lonely sound. And if you had a holwer with a bit deeper tone than normal that femmale can be killed in the next few days very easily by giving just a single lone howl or two and shutting up and waiting. Jimmie

Thanks guys. I don't know that much about their habits but I intend to learn. You are right Jimmie, it was a lonesome sound. I am going to try what you suggested tomorrow. I hope to report back to you that it worked out.

Haha, man, what a way to die. I agree with treerat, you could've atleast let her lay back and smoke a pack before you took her down.

Well geese are mates for life .

i knew that.lol i think more so than most. i know yotes pair off, and so do quail, but kill one and they soon find another. so i think for life takes in alot of time.
