I have a old 22 that I would like to paint the barrel and scope and stock. Any of you folks done this and if so what did you do to prep the stock and barrel and what type of paint did you use. No real reason just wanting to paint the gun not sure why just do.
Thanks

Go to Brownell's website and buy the teflon Paint from them, you heat cure it in your oven and it makes a very durable finnish

Below is a picture of my Ruger 10-22 that I recently painted... The barrell was stainless, and the receiver was stainless grey colored aluminum.

I just cleaned both items with rough steel wool real good, then took a rag and cleaned both items really good with acetone. applied a couple light coats of grey Krylon primer, and then a few coats of olive camo Krylon paint.

Looks pretty good, but the paint chips off fairly easy if you're a clutz like me and bang into things... This is a gun I hunt with though, so I figure I'll just touch it up when needed.

If it's a cheap gun that gets used alot and just needs a new finish, I'd definitely use the Krylon... If you are doing a higher end nice gun, I'd probably try the better products that are more designed for the application.

Good luck, and post pictures when you get it done.

I painted the barrel and action as well as the scope yesterday with the Krylon brown. Did nothing to the stock I had finished it last summer. I will post some pics when every thing is dry and I put it back together. It is a cheap russian 22 but it shoots great.

I painted a stainless Ruger 77/22. The Krylon was quite durable and touched up easy enough. I got curious and some vigorous steel wooling brought the paint off slowly, probably should use stripper though. All that wool sure made a bright finish even brighter, so I'm going back to the Krylon.

I don't know for sure if a stainless barrel scares game, but it sure can't help.
