Went hunting this weekend in the Nolin Lake WMA area. We had to cross private land in order to get to wma. We obtained permission from the landowner and headed into the woods. 10 minutes later, a guy came and said he owned the land that we crossed on, and he didn't want us there. We left and talked to an old timer in the area and he gave us some good advice about a different area. We got cussed out and ran off there because they said that the 15 yards of gravel road that led from the county road to the red line was private and we were trespassing, we were leaving and the guy said "That's what you city folks get for trying to hunt here". My question is where can city people hunt? We did the right thing, and we would never destroy or litter, so why judge a person from the plates on their truck. My buddy and I moved to Louisville from farther out in the country than the guy that was yelling at us. I understand one bad apple, but, It was only 15 yards of road.

Sorry to hear your hunt was ruined but let it be a lesson learned. Lots of times some of these guys will see someone is from out of the area and just say you aren’t allowed there and you may have just enough right as they do.

First of always know where you are hunting do your getting “written permission” signed by the land owner and where the property lines are at well in advance of opening day.

that wasn't our first choice, our first was overran by orange. We have a camp at Nolin too, but we have a pontoon and that can't get you anywhere. I can't afford to rent but thank you. The maps don't tell you what roads to the wma are private or public, and the 2 C.Os we have talked to don't have any ideas or suggestions.

The designated hunting areas have state roads bisecting the area, you can hunt from the parking area. Seems like a poontoon would be excellant to use for hunting.

What they don't tell you in the regs is that most of Nolin and Rough River WMA is only accessable through private land or by boat! I don't know about the other WMA's that are on Corp of Engineer lands around other lakes.

If you were already on WMA land, what the hell business is it of his where you hunt?I bet if you talk to a CO that knows the area,he'll probably tell you you can access at that point. You've got to watch some of these locals that own land joining WMAs, there's a parcel of greenriver WMA thats only accessible by a small gravel rd with diffrerant landowners on both sides of that rd,they try thier damdest to keep people out and most of the time they succeed, but everyone has the right to use that road to gain access

I would say that you are right. I will go back and check it out in the summer. This morning these guys were being hostile, and my main goal was getting home to my wife and kids. These days you can't tell what people will do. Thanks to everyone for their input. This site is great for long time hunters, and newbies alike. It is great to see.

Happens to be best of us. I started to get cussed one time for parking in the edge of a field owned by my grandpa because I blocked the view from two guys parked across the road trying to road hunt. I don't like getting cussing much so it didn't last long but after the fact I thought it was pretty comical the nerve of someone trying to poach and then getting upset because I blocked their view:rolleyes:

Like XI said don't let these folks ruin your hunting experience. I know its hard to believe but MOST hunters are pretty good people.

I had it to happen last year . We were hunting on the lake and planned to hunt all day. We came out for lunch to find a guy had parked his boat less than 20 yards from ours and then walked about 40 more yards up the lake and put out a pop up blind and was hunting when we arrived back for lunch. We proceeded to eat our lunch actually trying to be kinda quiet because he had a kid with him and I'm not a prick. Then this old bastard yells over and tell us to keep it down they are trying to hunt over there. I almost fell out of the boat I was so shocked. I first ask him if he was serious thinking he may actually know us and was just messing with us but he was serious. We argued around for a few minuets again I was in complete shock but when he told us he would call the game warden I had had enough so I told him to call the $$$$$$ warden because they had a law against harassing hunters and thats what we were doing and if he wanted to he could use my phone but he wasn't as interested as he acted, by then I was mad and it may not have been smart but I wasn't wanting to let it go because we had done no wrong what so ever so I ask him if he was blind because our boat had been sitting there all morning so why put out a blind right next to it and expect people to not be around, but he had had enough I guess because he hushed at that time and we let it go but I really didn't want to. He was there this year also but my buddy elected to hunt elsewhere because we really don't want any unnecessary trouble. I can't stand a bunch of pricks and I refuse to back down from them when they start. That may be bad but if a few of these guys got an ass whipping every time the acted dumb I'm guessing they wouldn't be so quick to act stupid, but a few would.

another thing you may want to try is checking with the county road dept.if it's listed as a co rd. which a lot of these small rural roads are, sorry about thier luck,it's as much your right to be there as anyone else.

Having had more than my fair share with trespassers and city hunters I stuggle to keep from being biased. The majority of hunters from cities are good guys and obey the rules and ethics of hunting. However, if you have ever spent your hard earned money buying and developing a piece of property only to have a few jerks tresspass and even climb into your tree stand and leave your gates open, cut fences, let your cows out, and block your gate and entrance it can become very frustrating.

I have lost a 8mo donkey to a stupid hunter who was from the big city and shot my pet thinking it was a muley. STUPID, then he didn't want to pay for it, BTW he was trespassing to boot. I have lost a dog and had numerous tree stands, blinds and trailcams stolen. I was shot once with birdshot while in my treestand as some idiots from town were roost shooting turkeys. And the list goes on and on.

My point is a few bad apples does ruin it for everyone. Now that I don't own a large ranch anymore I am in the same boat. That is why I try and hunt private land with written permission. With more and more of generation X and Generation slacker growing up I see more and more problems with public Hunting. These are not hunters just opportunists who give hunters a bad name. Kids aren't taught morals and ethics anymore at school or at homes and we are reaping this now.

BTW the so called landowner had no business treating you like he did, I have ejected several hostile poachers and trespassers and still didn't act like that .. Even when I was a LE officer I didn't treat them that way.

Good Luck finding a place and Good hunting
