View Full Version : Can't anyone kill with one shot??

It seems 90% of the many shots I've heard are multiple shots. One guy hunting less than 100 yards from me shot once then I could hear him running after the deer shooting 5 more times. Maybe some of the times they are shooting more than one deer but not most of the time. Maybe some time at the range is needed or a little better shot selection. This is getting crazy.

It is sad that people do not take the time to become proficient with the weapon they are going to use. ALso think of those that bought there gun firday night and havent even sighted the gun in, Then head to the woods with no thoughts of what is going to happen in the end.
Shoot straight and have a great day.

The thirst for antlers make some believe that a shot, any shot, into a deer will get it to go down. They are not hard to kill, but some guys totally forget shot placement in the heat of the moment

Heard someone shoot at least 4 times opening morning. You could tell they were just firing away. When firearm season comes in, they come out of the woodwork, and those are the ones you typically hear blasting away. Just grab the gun from behind the door and head out, don't worry about wearing any orange, and or tresspassing. Its sad.

Very well said.

I think the same thing every year--it seems it's a minimum of 3 shots per hunter most of the time--guess they think if it doesn't drop in it's tracks they missed or something

While hunting the quota hunt at green I heard someone shoot 5 shots and then after a few seconds thought okay you've had time to reload and yep there it went, five more shots.

WildmanWilson just make sure you climb HIGH in the tree and STAY THERE!! It seems to get crazier every year.

This is the very reason Ft Knox requires your shotgun to be plugged and still theres times you wish they were only single-shot shotguns. I'm not knocking anybody but there's times that just killing a deer takes priority over safety. Just be thankful that auto-loading compound bows havent been invented

I killed mine with one shot!!! But, yeah its getting crazy, most of the shots I heard on Saturday were multiple shots....

I shot four times this morning. Hit a buck with the first one. Missed a doe about fifteen seconds later...she ran 20 yards and stopped, shot again and dropped her and shot a fourth time to put the buck out of his misery. Missed the doe probably because of excitement from the buck. Sometimes you need more than one shot.

Same way here in knox county...All around you never hear just one single shot...I think some people needs some practice, or just stay at the house.

I've been wondering the same thing for years. There have been times when I've needed 2 or 3 shots to get the job done but like you all said, it really seems like just about every shot I hear anymore a multiple. I'm guessing it's mostly people freaking out when the deer doesn't drop dead in it's tracks.

I think a lot of times they get a good shot but the deer doesn't drop immediately. They then start unloading their weapon on the run-off.

Nothing against gun hunters at all so please dont take it as such... but this is one of the many reasons why I am a bow only hunter when it comes to deer. I decided 15 years ago that I hated the sound of my own rifle while shooting at deer and I certainly didnt care to hear anyone elses. To me, the noise takes away or causes such a disturbance for that one moment we all sit patiently and wait for.
When it comes to turkeys, different story for some reason... blast away at that ugly headed bird!!!
Back to topic.. I agree that most secondary shots are shots at an already fatally wounded deer.

I heard one person shoot 12 times. It's completely pathetic. There should be a shooting range where you buy your tag, if you can't hit in a 6" circle at 100 yards, you don't get a deer tag.

I only shot once and I dropped her!!
Other shots around me were ridiculous.

Apparently the cost of ammo hasn't gone up enough. Or I guess they're shooting up last year's cheap ammo.

There is no substitute for practice. This is my son's first year and he has shot 2 1/2 boxes of ammo at the range. Sat. morning, 1 shot,1 buck. Maybe he can't do it every time, but when he got to the woods at least he knew at 100 yds what his gun would do.

I've been wondering this same thing for years. Out of the dozens of deer I've ever shot, it only took one shot, except for a few exceptions:
1. First time I shot at a deer I was just 7... I missed, and two does were dancing all over the field, so I kept trying.
2. Accidentally loaded up some really hot reloads for a .44 magnum rifle... into a .44 magnum PISTOL. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Shot at this doe 3 times at 20 yards away, never did hit it.
3. Got so cold I was on the verge of hypothermia once... shot the deer, killed it with one shot, then it ran into a tree. I was shaking really bad after that and wasn't thinking right so I shot at it again thinking it was still alive.
Otherwise... one shot, one kill. Hell, even this weekend I plugged one at 210 yards and didn't even get another round into the chamber quickly, I just made sure my first shot was good.

I think another thing that contibutes to the many shots is that a lot of guys hunt from tree stands and they dont have a nice rest or rail to put their gun on. They are just shooting off hand and its much harder to make that shot. That coupled with a bad case of nerves.

I don't think its all about the antlers.
