Okay fellas, I gotta show you what this ignorant bowhunter knows about guns. I have a Mossberg 500A with a slug barrel and a bird barrel with an adjustable choke. I also have a camoflauged Turkey gun Mossberg 500 with a vented port. Recently I have been able to get my daughter, who hates hunting, out to do some trap shooting and she seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. The problem is that my 500A with the bird barrel is just to big for her to handle. Is there any problem using the turkey gun to shoot trap with, is there any problem shooting bird shot through the slug gun?

Thanks fellas

Kenny

Kenny, are you shooting on an organized trap field or are you just throwing clay birds for her to shoot? The reason I ask is because the way I answer this will be completly different depending on your answer. Also what's your daughters age? She might better be served by getting her a youth model that actually fits her. In shooting trap with a turkey gun, I think having a modified choke in it would work better if your not using it. Short vented barrels on a regular trap field will not make you any friends of the people standing next to you. But if your just throwing birds, it shouldn't be a problem.......

Just throwing birds in the backyard. She's 15 and had a little trouble with the long bird barrel. I think the short barrel would be okay but i wanted to make sure i wouldnt damage it or the rifled deer barrel for the other gun.

Thanks

Kenny, I don't know if the Blue Grass Sportsmans club in Wilmore is too far to travel, but we have a youth clinic for kids each week. We'll provide the guns, shells and birds. You provide the kid.

Just shooting some shots shouldn't hurt the barrel. You may notice problems busting birds though. A rifled choke puts a spin on the shot/wad and you'll get a big hole in the center of your pattern. She actually may be dead nuts on a bird and miss it.

Let me know if you (or anyone else) is interested.

Thanks Rick, We shot a 3D out there last year. Supposedly the first they've had in a while connected with the CKAA. What a great place but it was so huge I had trouble finding my way around. I went to the main "lodge" and was told they didn't even know of a 3D shoot that day. I would enjoy it but she's very shy and probably wouldn't go. Thanks and I'll be sure to pass the word around. Wilmore is only about 25-30 minutes from me.

Kenny, try to talk her into going. We had several young ladies show up at Fern Creek to try thier hand at trap. Have her shoot at some old milk jugs first and then move on to the moving targets. We need all the new blood in the shooting sports we can get. I have my grandaughter (4 years old) with her own bow tagging along with us shooting 3D. When she gets old enough I'll have her on the trap range too. She already talks about going hunting with her Papa. I may buy one of those pop up blinds and take her turkey hunting this spring.

Kenny, I'll find out when the next events are being held. We do one each month (different events) and I'll let you know. As for the shyness, we can fix that too. Most of our shooters are there to have fun (required) first and shooting second. My daughter is 13 (going on 20) and loves to work with new shooters. We are kinda shut down (kids events) for the next few weeks due to the holidays. If ya want and we can get some decent weather, we can meet out there one evening and have some small private lessons with her.

Okay, thanks guys, let me know and I'll try to talk her into it. Roger, my daughter started like that also, she would go squirrel hunting with me, had her own recurve and would shoot with us. She still shoots with us maybe twice a year but shes happy to go to a 3D shoot with me and her mom and brother and run the video camera instead of shooting. She's just yer typical girl princess, she doesn't like to go outside much anymore (scared to death of tics) and won't even use the pool much. I just give her the space she needs, she'll come around. She's not moody or termperamental like most 15 year olds she just looks at me and says "Dad, I really don't want to if that's okay". Of course thats okay, I don't want to force her.

Thanks for the info on the guns fellas. Maybe if she gets good enough in her mind she'll be interested in going "public".

Hey Kenny my daughter is the same way also(16 going on 25). She may be starting to change "back" to the outdoors, I'm not sure, I hope she does , but they do have a mind of their own(a good thing I think) [:D]...I know how hard it is to love something so much and they don't "get it" anymore(but once they did)..At least my oldest son still loves it (more every year I think) [:)]

She will be 17 in Feb. and seems just now to be getting "into" the outdoors once again, so don't give up just yet, I think they just need to be "their own person" first and then they come back around(wishful thinking???)

From 14 to around 18 they are thier own "person". Its remarkable how they turn around when they hit 18, its almost like they are a different person. (two daughters) If you can just hang on till then!!!!!
