Well, Saturday the family got together and made up 30 gallons of our special homemade burgoo :D Man, I love that stuff. Beef, venison, turkey, chicken, and elk all made there way into this years batch along with all the usual suspects, and I personally think it is the best yet.

This is the first year that we cheated and made an automatic stirring gizmo. We normally have someone stationed at the pot in 45 minute increments. Took some of the fun out of it, but all that meant was we had more energy at the end of the day to eat!!!:D Mrs. Philpot and I officially have enough burgoo to last us till summer of next year (hopefully). I would post pictures but it is already frozen in quart freezer bags in the basement. Just take my word for it, its good:D

What the heck IS burgoo, anyway? Am I right in thinking it is basically meat-and-vegetable soup that is slow-cooked for hours, giving the cooks an excuse/opportunity to drink a large amount of beer? If so, I can see the attraction... :D

It must be a Western KY thang. I don't know a single person who's ever mentioned having a bowl of it.

Just go thru the kitchen/garden/meat freezer, dump it all in, throw in a couple beers, spices, water, then cook it for 3 days. Goes great with Grilled Cheese or PB&J sandwiches. ;) :D

I swear you read my mind. I think the origin of the name is from "gooey-burger". The first batch was just a dressed hamburger that somebody made a stew out of and called it burgoo.;)

It is basically a combination of a bunch of different ingredients including a lot of meat (total of about 30 pounds worth) and just as much veggies. For about the first three hours of slow cooking it tastes like veggie soup, then for some reason, it takes on a different texture and taste. Ours is a thicker version.

It used to be cooked in big open kettles over a fire. Philpot, what kind of pot are you throwing this stuff into? If it's on the stove top, I'll bet your using more than one burner.

Maybe an eastside western KY thang. I don't know anyone in this area that does it.
