View Full Version : shot load for 50 cal
I am new to muzzleloading and was wondering if it is possible/practical to use a 50 cal loaded with shot for squirrel/rabbit hunting?

It is probably possible to work up a load for a 50 caliber but it would not be the most practiceable thing to do. I think it would be like shooting a low power .410 plus the wear and tear on the riflings in the barrel. Most guys go the other way around and work up a load for their smoothbore (shotgun) to shoot round ball. A 12 guage shotgun uses a .720 round ball and it is something to be reckoned with out to 50 yards.
If you take head shots only, you can use your 50 caliber as is. No running shots and I would recommend re-sighting for twenty-five yards. Your other option is to contact Green Mountain Riffle Barrel CO. at 603-447-1095. Ask if the have a shotgun drop-in barrel replacement for your gun.
Good luck!!
