I keep hearing that KY has a bounty on coyotes now. Does anyone know if this is true and if so what are the details. I know that the bounty existed several years ago but each county was only given a set amount and when that was gone it was not replaced. Also what is your opinion of the bounty system? Is it something that would help or hurt?

I don't know of one either. I'm not sure if it would help or hurt, kind of depends on which side of the topic you are on. The FEW coyote hunters have nearly unlimited hunting land with very little competition right now, a bounty could put the hurt on that and cause a bunch a yahoos to start educating the coyotes and make calling them a nightmare. On the other hand, if you are on the side that wants the coyotes gone, I suppose it would help some, but then again, they will never be completly gone, bounty or not. Hmmm, tough question.

We have never had a bounty system that I know of in the state of Ky. Nor are we likley too.

In some states individual counties have tried the bounty system and got nothing but headaches for it. They have paid for coyotes for all surrounding counties as well. And it didn't even help that counties own problems. IN one instance coyotes were even brought in from another state. Bounty money's wind up being depleted very quickly by folks with no morals!!

It also causes all manner of illegal hunting and trapping practices. We have enough of those problems without adding greed to the mix.

We were at one time able to hunt coyote at night without lights. Even this caused all kinds of problems. When some found out they could hunt them at night they used lights and shot all manner of animals coming to th calls besides coyotes. It was possible to use the full moon and take a great number of just coyotes, but some folks just don't want to take the time to learn or follow the rules.

If everyone was honest these things could work quite well. But as usual the rest of us pay for those who do not follow the rules.

For th farmer having problems it is best to call an ADC trapper. The state has a list of these gentlemen on the website. This will get rid of the problem animals without allerting th neighbors or anyone else to what he is doing or having done. One time and his problem is likely cured for several years. It winds up cheaper for the farmers and the rest of us in the long run. Jimmie
