Shot a nice 8 pointer tonight .I shot at him at what i judged as 30 yards wasnt sure if i even hit him i heard the smack and he ran with tail down so i sat for two hours watching another buck i guessed at about 135 .when i got down just to make sure i missed i found last 10 inches of my arrow broken with just a tiny bit of blood splatter on the fletchin and hair stuck in the broken end but no blood on the ground i was only able to search for about 20 yards it was just to dark and with all the red leaves i just couldnt see ended up this deer was actually 40 yards im wondering if i hit his shoulder and just didnt have enough umpp to penatrate through.anyone with any thought im going back in the morning to look .By the way i saw 9 bucks and 4 does in 4 hours this afternoon every buck that i saw made a scrape and 3 hit a few trees looks like its starting to fire up around here .

A lantern puts out enough light to track by and the blood shows up good by it. I would call a buddy and go back tonight. As far as a 40 yard shot your arrow should still have good penetration. Good luck and keep us posted.

if you guessed the deer at 30, and it was actually 40, my guess is you hit the deer in the leg. were you in a treestand over 12 feet high? if so, you may have hit high enough to get into the lower part of the shoulder.

My guess is low in the shoulder. However the 30 yard shot misjudged and was actually 40 could be a knee buster. I'm guessing the 10 inches of arrow you found is the fletching end. When you put an arrow into the shoulder blade, if the broadhead lodged in the other shoulder or passed through the opposite side, when that deer takes its first step...SNAP goes the arrow. Not a lot of blood tells me the broadhead didn't pass through the other side. I bet you find that deer in the morning with a lot of blood in the cavity and not on the ground. As long as you didn't gut shoot it and are sure you punched the shoulder blade not the leg...I would be out tonight with a lantern. Or if you can sleep do that and look in the morning. Let us know, good luck. Hope he is bigger than the 135 you saw later!
