Governor lifts ban on open burning
October 19, 2007
Frankfort, Ky. – Gov. Ernie Fletcher has lifted the statewide ban on opening burning. Gov. Fletcher, in an executive order signed today, said the state of emergency created by forest fires no longer exists in the state. County judge-executives may still impose burn bans if local conditions warrant. Open burning is still prohibited within 150 feet of the woods between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to Leah MacSwords, director of the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
Gov. Fletcher initially imposed the open burning ban Oct. 4, due to the drought conditions throughout the state.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett said the cancellation of the ban is good news for hunters. The statewide early muzzleloader season for white-tailed deer is this weekend, Oct. 20-21.
“Hunters who might have been concerned about the burn ban affecting their season have no reason to worry,” Gassett said. “The recent rains have helped reduce the fire danger and made the woods less noisy for hunters this weekend.”
Gassett advises hunters to continue to be careful when building campfires, and keep all fires 150 feet away from the woods between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
