I can't help it and I figure this will offend some people here but oh well.

I am on the no call list because I HATE solicitors of any kind. I hate being disturbed by phone calls at my home at all hours from someone wanting to get my hard earned money the easy way.

That said, my current beef is with the fire dept here. They call my house at least once a week trying to get me to donate money. This pisses me off. Granted, I have respect for firemen and I almost became one this past year but decided to stay where I'm at. I feel that something is just not right about goverment employees soliciting me for money over the phone. You know what? If you think you deserve more money either get another job or hit up the city council, don't call me like a credit card company. Other agencies don't call me wanting money.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest after yet another phone call.

Art, I agree with you. I also wish the no call list applied to political calls.

i absolutely hate a telemarketer of any kind. lately i have been getting an are code 615 number on my cell with some kind of mexican gibberish on it. that really chaps me when they call my cell phone at 4am:mad:

i would call the fire dept and ask if they are collecting money, or paying someone to do it for them, then ask politely if they are collecting to stop calling. usually if you give money to them one time they will wear you out with return calls for more money. my bride gave money to the fop a few years back, then later found it was "paid professional" solicitors and not the actual FOP.

I agree, that is what I tell most of them. If you need more money call your rep 265 times a day instead of bothering me. I tell them I contribute over 10000 a year to charrity each year, Taxes.

I don't think I have ever given them money directly. Maybe I gave some to some charity at some point who sold my name or something. I guess I should say that I don't really know who it is on the other end of the line, but I doubt it's Joe Firefighter sitting in a room at the local firehouse.

I'm a charitable person and I'll give money from time to time when I feel that the organization or person really NEEDS it, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

I have no trouble with giving to someone in need. But for the money I believe the NWTF, QDMA, NSSF, catch a dream, kosairs, ect ect is a better place.

I feel your pain Art.

We bought our house in January of this year. The previous owners were in bad shape, financially. They took the equity, at closing, and paid back taxes. We've foung credit card statements totalling nearly $100K in debt. Now, we get calls from collections agencies for the previous owners because they have tied OUR phone number to the previous address of the dead beats. We've called and told them on several ocassions that they no longer live here, but I'm sure they hear that all the time. It's typically 3-4 times a day and 1-2 times each evening.

What I really hate is people bumming money in public. Working in Atlanta, I get that alot! A couple of weeks ago as I started to go into a restauraunt for lunch some guy walks up to me and handed me a printed card. It basically said that he was a 'deaf/mute' and was in desperate need of any 'contributions' I could make.
Well, I guess he didn't count on running into an ex teacher that knows sign language. I just smiled and signed "Why don't you work?" He got this really surprised look on his face, then turned and practically ran off! hehehe... deaf/mute my ***! Real hearing impaired people hate that term!

Good for you, too many people will just assume they are legit and hand over money.

I just, and I mean just hung up the phone with someone from a resort wanting me to take advantage of a promotional deal that they were offering to past customers. The funny thing is that I am not a past customer. When I told her that she then tried to throw a sales pitch on me telling me how she was sure that I would be taking a vacation sometime over the next year. I proceeded to tell her that I did not know if I would and I would really appreciate it if she or anyone else that worked with her did not call me back, ever. The lady wanted to know how many times I had been contacted. This was the third or fourth time that someone had called me with the same offer. Guess what? I have denied them every time. She said that she would have my number removed.

Did I mention that all this happened over my cell phone as well?

I wish I could just find my phone. Lost it three weeks ago here at the house.:(

I did buy a raffle ticket back in 2002 from Hopkins co. volunteer Fire Dept. Five bucks a piece. I bought one and it got me a new Beartracker fourwheeler.:D

This guy supposedly found a way to get those telemarketers to pay up.
http://killthecalls.com/suing-telemarketers.html

Apparently it is against the law for them to call you more than once after you request to be placed on their do not call list.

Well first of all, regarding the "do not call list", did you realize that this is about to expire? Yep. If your name is on "the list", it won't mean much pretty soon. Now, I think they're going to have another one, but when it expires, basically telemarketers can legally call you during that lapse.

Our local fire department is the only ones we donate to anymore. They will call once a year and that's it. It's a small volunteer fire department. We go to church with some of them and most live very close to us. It's the local boys who do the calling.

as much as i hate telemarketers, i also hate junk mail.....i just made the trip back from the mailbox.......you guessed it......one piece of mail that i actually needed, and 4 addressed to resident/occupant, 3 addressed to me that are credit card "your pre approved" deals, 3 addressed to the wife, identical to the ones i got. 11 pieces of mail in one run to the box, not counting sale circulars.....i usually open them, see if there is a postage paid return envelope inside, and if there is, put the trash in the return envelope and send it back:D

It is awful at work. I tried putting our business on the list, but I've heard it only applies to residences, not businesses. All I know is that we get 15-20 per day on average. We get at least one a day from "AT&T", wanting to sell us on a different package. Bellsouth wants our internet. The recorded ones are the worst. It is tough enough trying to do business in a fast-paced environment without those annoying calls. We service our US Representative's father's car, so I've put out the word about it!:D

I get about 2 calls a month about betting on football games:mad: I have never placed a bet (other than getting axed from the kyhunting site for a week because of the superbowl:D) on a football game or any other game for that matter. And I don't give out my cell number to just anyone, so I don't know how they got it.

Why don't you guys just put all of your numbers on the no call list? It applies to cell phones as well. They will prosecute too... already tested that one out on an outfit out of Florida a couple of years ago. :D

Where did you get that? The Kentucky no call list is being merged with the national one but that is all that is changing. Your number only stays on the list for 5 years before it comes off regardless. If you still have time left ont he KY list, that time will transfer to the national. I just renewed all of mine online last week.

Rarely do I ever get telemarketing calls. If I do, it's normally some non-profit deal, some garbage that my wife didn't read the fine print about before okaying or some affiliate of a company that I have business with (which chaps me because it's legal).

When I do get ones that aren't legal, I report every one of them.

I've never had one on my cell phone.. although I rarely ever give my cell number out to anyone except personal contacts. I just opted out of some crap that could have been coming from Verizon tonight, though. They tried to sneak a fast one in on their customers by changing the terms of everyone's contract, making "data collection for affiliates" legal.

Always read the fine print, always.....

I don't think this is what I would call a scam, but it could be because they call about every 2 weeks. It shows up on caller ID as KY PRO FIREFIGHTERS. Maybe I shouldn't post their phone number, but I have it.
Anyone familiar with an 859 area code with the prefix 581?

I have been on the no call list since it's inception and I've not really had any issues. I still get calls from a credit card company I used to do business with (before I swore off plastic forever). The way I understand it, you can still receive calls from companies if you had a business relationship in the past. Thank God I only had one credit card.

Junk mail also gets under my skin. That's one of the few times where I think like a enviromentalist and wonder just how many trees are chopped down to send me worthless crap. I've heard that there is also a no junk mail list, but when I tried to find it it required a lot more than your address. It seemed a tad shaddy to me.

Tom Mabe is hilarious...he has been on Bob and Tom alot. The one where he pretended to be a detective at a murder scene was great!!! I used to tell the telemarketers that I was so glad they called me with a preapproved offer since I was being investigated for credit card fraud. They usually hung up.

That's the good thing about having a cell phone for a home phone. You don't have all the hassel from sales people.

....hahaha..thats hilarious. There is one that Tom Mabe did where he asks the woman if she wants to make a "movie" and she jokes around with him saying yes and that she had done them in the past blah blah. Well, that next monday he calls the company she works for and pretends to be her doctor and gets her cell number, calls her and says he is from a consumer agency that monitored her call. He told her that her behavior was inappropriate and told her not to return to work that she was fired.....it was HILARIOUS!!!

I actually theoretically work for telemarketers. I have a side job where I do contracting work as a programmer for whoever is willing to pay. :D Seriously. These guys are legit though, they'd never call most people here. It's actually based in western Kentucky. It's for hospital jobs. I have to write programs that a telemarketing call center looks at and determines who would be very likely to accept a particular job. They'll get a hot list of people who may have every qualification and lives a block away from the hospital. They'll call these people and if everybody is not interested, the radius gets expanded and the qualifications dropped a little. That keeps happening until somebody is found. Pretty interesting. Perfectly legit, as these people want to hear about the jobs, and have to register their qualifications before they'll ever get called, but yeah it is a telemarketing call center. I've always wondered if I was responsible for somebody going ballistic at home because their football game was interrupted. :D

You have to watch the Kentucky fire fighters association. They are a scam big as Texas. They used to call here almost daily wanting donations. I asked repeatedly to be removed and they would say they would but, they would call back the next day. Went on for several months until I called the Attorney General and they sent them a letter. Haven't had a call from them since. Thank you Attorney Generals office. :) I knew someone in Frankfort had to be good for something. Now I know what it was.
