I'm leaving out tomorrow afternoon with my daughter and the Calloway Co. Laker Band heading for Louisville. We have our 4-A division state semi-finals Saturday at Brandenburg/ Meade Co. and if were lucky and make the top 4 cut in competition ... we will compete that night at Louisville Cardinal Stadium ( Papa Johns) for all the marbles.
This is the first time.. in a long time I wont be firing up the smoke pole this weekend... ouch. I try not to think about it. I know theres a few band people on here with kids competing this weekend. Just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck in hopes for a good finish at state and safe traveling to Louisville. :)

You can check on this site and click on the Oct. 20th line-ups and check the divisions 1-A through 5-A to see if your school made the cut. We had state quarter finals last weekend to set the field.

90's... maybe.:D We did score an 85.22 last weekend.. second to Madisonville North's 87.49. We've chased them all season but have'nt caught them yet. Its been good competition between the schools the last few seasons... Madville are the reigning state champs. Our rilvary has resulted in both band programs becoming better for it. I know they have made us work hard and they probably can say the same.
Heres a pic of Calloways percussion section in 2006 where we finished 2nd to Madisonville at state finals. The pit is on the ground and the drumline standing. My youngun ... second row .. second from right. We had three girls last season marching bass drums. Shes in the middle. Kinda makes all the work the kids & parents do worthwhile.

Jamie ..... Best of luck to you and yours!!
We'll be going up Saturday.
I don't expect our kids (LYON CO) to make it out of the semis, but ya never know.
We have a new director and alot of inexperenced kids (my daughter is only in 8th grade). I'll give them credit, they have worked their butts off maybe they're just topping out :D.
Maybe we'll see ya @ Pappa Johns.

Wade..Good luck to ya'll as well. Were in the same boat with our daughter. She's been in band since 6th grade... asked to march with the highschool as an 8th grader... now a sophmore . Weve been fortunate to have been state finalist for the last three years shes been marching.
Kids of all the bands put in a lot of hard work and you never know about the judging. Hope to see you in the final -4.

Best of luck to everyone today. I spent 4 years traveling the circuit, loading and unloading trucks, hauling equipment onto the field, etc. for Hopkinsville - and enjoyed it all. Watching the kid's excitement when they hit the field lets you know its worth the effort. They do appreciate your support.:)
...but now its off to the woods for me :D

O.k. folks, I feel like a heal right now. I have never given up this weekend to hunt for either of my kids band competition. just one of a few I always miss. Well, state finals feel this time today and she said she understood and I wished her the best of luck. well, I find out today, after they are there, according to my wife, she asked a friend did daddy show up.:( I thought we were good on this. I have been calling and checking and even called her on the cell to congratulate her because South Suns took FIRST PLACE :D in the semi-finals class AA and are now advancing to the finals tonight!!!!!!!!!!! She seemed really happpy when I called. Just had to vent a little, I feel kinda mixed on this.

Let me get this straight... your daughter, a FEMALE, told you "Sure go ahead and go hunting, instead of coming to watch me at this huge event."
And you actually believed her. A FEMALE.
My man, she will get over it but in my opinion you owe the young lady an expensive shopping trip and a very nice dinner. :)

Muhlenberg South Marching Suns Class AA State Champs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mr. 12 Pointer,
That is great news! Having been in and out of the band scene since the days of Hughes-Kirk, Bremen, Muhlenberg Central, etc. I can just imagine how big a deal this is for the South program, Muhlenberg County, and most especially the kids involved.
Our western end of state was well represented as Madisonville and Calloway placed 1-2 in class AAAA (Congrats JD!) and Murray placed 2nd in class AA. (Muhlenberg North also finished 5th in AAA, just missing the cut for the finals competition.)
Here is a picture from the Courier-Journal, (know any of these kids?)

Congrats Mike... especially your daughter and all the Suns band. I knew ya'll could pull it off. When we finally got to Papa Johns stadium with the band and took our seats... the 2-A class was beginning. Ya'll nailed it.... best performance of the season.
We made a good stab at Madville with probably our best of the year...we just came up a little short with the judges. I honestly dont know the actual scores ... hope they post them up tonight. Madville was smoking last night... and thought it was a toss-up between Calloway & Madville.. but Madisonville came out on top. We cant complain ...its been a good season. We have made finals for three consecutive seasons.... with the last two finishing second in state 4-A competition. Kids were a little disappointed but soon realized their accomplishment. Competition was tough in all the classes with bands just getting better every year.
We left out ahead of the band and just pulled in the driveway when my youngun calls and says the equipment bus with insturments & uniforms was broke down at Central City. I think Murray High is lending us a hand but its going to be awhile before they get home. Been a long weekend.;)
Again congrats to all the bands that made finals!!
Muhlenberg -South : 2-A division state champions
*Murray High : 2nd place 2-A division state runner up
Madisonville : 4-A division state champions
*Calloway Co. : 2nd place 4-A division state runner up
* Both schools in Calloway Co... placed 2nd in state in two different divisions. Thought that was pretty cool.:D
North-Hardin - 3rd place 5-A (Congrats Harpp... 5-A is tough)
Others..
1-A champions = Williamstown
3-A champions = Adair
