Stick with the Remington. Great rifle and the 30-06 will do everything you need. You may want to consider upgrading the optics, bases and rings on the current rifle (if you haven't already). I have learned the hard way not to go cheap on the scope. Check out the Leupold, Kahles, Zeiss very high quality optics.
For me, I have never had much luck with Ruger rifles. I couldn't get them to group. I was not happy with 2-21/2 inches at 100 yards, even thoough that is sufficent for deer.
Good luck,

Shot a ruger m77 for years topped with Leupold scope. No problem grouping once I found the shells it liked, it was particular about what I fed through it.

I have a 25-06 M77 with a 26" bull barrel and a trigger job. I also have a 700 (30-06), a 70 Supergrade (.338) and a regular 70 (300WSM). I like them all, but that Ruger is by far the most accurate. I really like the 25-06 caliber. It's hugely underrated and overlooked as a deer gun, especially for kids and women. For them, it would be my first choice. It's tough to beat the versatility of the 30-06, though. Frankly, I like all the calibers of the bolt actions I have.

You have to watch the older MK2 w/the synthetic stock...It will kick your a$$...My .338 holds a 1" group at 200yds W/Federal premium ammo. Fit and finish are great too.

Met a guy at the range that was so fond of his Stainless/Synthetic 300 Mag Ruger bolt-action, he sold his other rifles, and used the cash for some fly-in hunting trips. He was getting tight groups, it was reliable and tough, built to last. I'd consider one myself if I was looking to buy another rifle. We let each other pop off a few rounds thru each other's rifles, man talk about kick, a 338 is even more...wow. I'd be wanting a muzzle brake!

I have a M77 .270 that I hunted with for years and then got like many other hunters and thought the bigger the better. Wrong. I bought a Rem. 700 in a 7mm ultra mag, killed mule deer and bear and am now ready to go back to the M77. The 77 is a sweet gun, you can't go wrong. Happy hunting.[:)]

Well I have something too say soo bare with me and I'l keep it SHAP [short,as,poss.] I currently have two old model M-77's the first a 338 Win. the second a 30-06,the 06 belonged to my father and is the "round top" version that takes Rem. 700 bases. He bought it with it's twin in 7 MM Rem.Mag. from the White Elephant in Spokane in the early seventies. About 15 years ago he gave it too me as a x-mas present, he had loaned it too me in the summer and when I called him during the holidays and thanked him for the use of his ought-six he said..."hell buddy....I'm poor this year....merry x-mas".
Its had a happy home ever since, now I must tell you I own several rifles,[and have owned several M-77..old style not MKII's....nothing wrong with those though] including three of the vaunted Pre-64 Win. Mod 70 in 30-06,300H&H and a 375H&H........when I go hunting I may take my 338 M-77....but regardless of what I take....{some of you can identifie....huum honey which one should I take?] I always....repeat...always take my dads ol M-77 30-06. It always shoots to the same POI year after year and is the most reliable feeding rifle I have ever handled next to my pre-war Mauser.
Thats right I said it. My old model...push feed M-77 has never balked ...not even once...upside down....sideways or catawampus......my 375 is particular about what you feed it [huum think about that while hunting lions...choose your ammo wisely young man lest you live to be an old one] Of course I know I will get flamed for saying that,,,,the 375 is perfect with proper ammo, but when I am....underline the word....HUNTING.....my M-77...one or both go along. They are good solid depenable rifles and mine are both more accurate than I can shoot from a field position, and I am a competive shooter to boot soo I know what its like. Bottom line....shoot the rifle [or handgun] you are most comfortable with and don't worry about the name....let the other guy worry while your packing out your kill.

I own 2 Ruger M77's, a compact .243 and a .220 swift, both are very accurate. 1" groups of 5 shots with the .243 @ 100 yards. 1" groups of 5 shots @ 200 yards with the .220. They may be capable of tighter groups, but thats the best "I" can get from the bench. In comparison, my Rem 700 adl in .308 I get 1" groups at 200. Although not the best optics on the market I have redfield 3x9x40's on all 3 and steel rings. Don't buy cheap aluminum rings, this is not an area for comprimise. Newer Rugers come with there own steel rings.

I have three Ruger M-77's which I have used for Deer Hunting in Kentucky. My Ruger-77's are chambered for: .270 Win., 7.62 X 39 m/m, and I also have a M-77/44 in .44 Magnum. I have taken several Deer with each rifle and consider the Ruger brand a very fine & accurate rifle, and I've always had great luck with them all.
