I just bought my first muzzleloading shotgun which is traditional in style (not an inline), Thompson Center Black Mountain Magnum. It does however have screw in choke tubes. Obviously, I need to spend some time patterning my gun but I was wondering where to start (load recommendations, what choke tube, etc.). I plan on hunting turkey's this spring and was wonder what tips you guys have to offer as well as what my expected effective range will be.

i have a cva trapper 12 ga caplock. i have a regular full choke not tubes. i shoot 80 gr of goex and an equal measure of 4's or 5's. have killed 2 longbeards and a double bearded jake with it.
just have to wait till the cloud clears to figure it all out.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing you are shooting around 1 ounce and 1/2 of shot. Just curious, what is your effective range with this load?

25 yrds. don't know the weight of the shot load. rule of thumb is equal measure of powder and shot.
