can a deer lose before dying?I shot a doe tonight and i tracked for probably 1 and a half miles and she bled like you was pouring it out of a bucket. My light was getting weak and i knew my family would be getting worried so i came in for another light.I am going back and see if i can find her as i know if she lays overnight she will ruin.I thought i made a good shot on her.Wish me luck.

If Your Finding This Much Blood You Must Have Made A Decent Shot, But You Maybe Pushing Her Also. Good Luck And Keep Us Posted.

Blood is one of those things...a little always looks like a LOT more than it really is. I'm certainly not saying that she is not bleeding that much. I shot a doe several years ago that ran about 75 yards and laid down. You would have swore that whe dumped 2 gallons of blood out. I never found that deer.
Keep looking, it sounds like you had a good blood trail to follow until the light gave out.

I tracked the biggest buck I ever shot through a clear cut one time and had blood on my pants from the waist down. I thought he would be laying in there but I bumped him out of his bed and he walked out of my sight---forever.
You made the best decision by pulling out of there. Good luck.

Sounds to me like you got one lung and some liver. The worst thing you can do is push him/her.
Let us know if you find her....and Good Luck!!!!!

To answer the question of how much, an average human has about a gallon and a half and will expire when about half of it is gone. That amount can vary some one way or the other based on a lot of extenuating factors, but thats about it. 3 quarts. 6 pints. At about half that amount, 3 pints, you will begin going into severe shock pretty rapidly and lose consciousness just before expiring.
A deer won't vary much from that. How much your deer actually lost is very hard to gauge even for experts. Internal bleeding is just as deadly as external bleeding, and an animal can expire without having much blood (or even none) actually escaped their body. Lot's of guys swear good hits and no blood trail and at least a bunch of them are internal bleeders (the others are guys who missed but can't bring themselves to believe it). Fortunately, this isn't your problem. How much blood a "good" easy to follow blood trail really is can also be deceptive. If you want proof, turn a 4 year old loose for five minutes with four ounces of red paint (1/4 pint, not enough to be threatening to an otherwise healthy adult), and a brush, in a room of white laundry. You'll swear the kiddo murdered half of kentucky.

If he had gottton a lung and a liver, he would have found her within 100 yards. A liver shot is lethal. Shot a doe last year thru 1 lung and liver. She was dead 2 hops and 10 seconds later. traveled 12 yards. I ain't kidding. He has made a Major flesh wound in my opinion.

No info on the shot placement? How long did you wait before tracking her? A muscle shot won't clot and will keep bleeding if you push her and she keeps working the leg.

My father in-law stuck one a few years ago (one lung and liver) and we tracked him for 4 hours. It's hard to say how much ground we covered.
Heck,I double lunged a doe last year and she made it well over 100 yards.
Like you say, he could have made a major flesh wound as well.

If you've gone 1 1/2 miles then this is what has happened, any lethal hit and she would of been down fairly quick. Even though I've heard of artery hits that traveled some distance before expiring and even tracked a doe for my brother in law that bled internal and she went 1/4 mile, boy she was a tough one to follow only one drop every 30 yards or so. You may of even caught her low and made her bleed heavy, who knows maybe she layed up somewhere and is healing up..Hate it for you brother but we've all been there, keep us posted

Well I would have to disagree with all of the made a bad hit . I shot a 10 point which is on my wall right now . I hit him on the run , blew his biscuits right off , he hit the ground like a brick . I jumped out of my ground blind , and he jumped up and ran I hit him again in the shoulder , and the back , found him 6 hours later . I bet he had less than a pint of blood in him . I think deer are more resliant than we give them credit . After I gutted him he had a hole in his lower heart , hole through his stomach ,liver and it was a mess , then of course his biscuits had been blown off , and he had a cosiderable hole there .So I think he could have hit it good just a tough deer , I think adrenaline has alot too do with it as well !!!:D

A liver shot is very lethal and wont travel far. Back a few years ago I drew back on a buck and hit high & little back. I'll never forget the deers reaction...he kicked both back legs up and just stood there for a few moments...like a bee stung him. He made maybe 10 steps and fell over dead. Where my arrow & muzzy passed through and stuck in the ground ...to where he fell...maybe 7 ft. Easiest tracking job I ever done.
A single lung hit... which is very possible due to height...distance and angle ...will bleed a lot at first and then just stop. They will travel a long ways ..maybe bedding for short periods you may find a trace of blood. Usually your regular bubble blood but can be non lethal. I had a first hand account of this happening ... never found the deer but we sure tracked him a long..long ways...over a couple days until we lost him completly. I'm also sure coyotes wont help this situation either.

Another story , My Dad hit a 22 inch wide perfect 8 point with his company car back in 1984 , back then it did $3000 to the car . Him and guys from work said the damage to the car the deer had to be around . So they started looking never found a drop of blood . The deer had crossed two different bean fields , and went over a 16 foot wide irrigation ditch !! They finally found him , and he had zero damage fromt the outside. They drug him gutted him , by the way field dressed 202 pounds , he was a hoss , good corn fed Michigan deer . Only damage they found was a slice throug his liver . They went outside found a piece of chrome from the car inch wide that had blood on it . Thats the only thing that killed this deer . So hey might have never died if that would have not happened to his liver . So you never know wat a deer can endure , one will react different than another !!!:D

For proper herd population control you should shoot does, not the biscuits off of bucks! Good Story!!

I shot a doe and clipped one in front of it in it's "guzzle". It bled for almost 2 miles and was Hell to track, but I found it finally. It had blood all over it's front and down it's sides where it was running.

Let me get this right. I've been hunting deer for years now and I'm just NOW finding out about guzzles and biscuits. I'm not even going to mention the sausage, gravy and ham.

You did all you could do and probably a lot more than a lot of guys would.

It happens. All you can do is look as long as you can which sounds like you did.
At least you gave the coyotes a meal. Go back and shoot a couple of them and make yourself feel better.

I feel your loss , I lost one and spent 2 days trying to find it only to find it a few days later crawled up in a drainage ditch, I had been within 20 yards of it. You gave it one heck of an effort so try not to let it get you down.

It has happened to many of us here. The best thing you can do is go back thru the chain of events and see if/where you went wrong. Use this as a learning experience. If you keep hunting, it will happen again. Keep your head up. :D

If an experienced hunter ever tells you that he has not lost a deer before, he is a liar IMO.. its going to happen to everyone eventually, good job on going to find her and not let it lay on your mind that she is suffering which she is not

ALL YOU CAN DO IS GRAB YOUR BOW AND GO BACK, AND STICK ANOUTHER. IF YOU BOW HUNT , THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN NO MATTER HOW GOOD ANYBODY IS. SORRY , AT LEAST YOU FOUND HER.
