in the time i've been coming to this site i've enjoyed talking to some of you, but due to some recent happenings i think it is time for me to move on to another site due to some hard feeling that have came up over my style of bear hunting. so not wanting to start any arguments due to my often hot headed nature i'll more than likely be moving on. anyone who wishes to contact me can do so at my email address which is jeffst1@comcast.net

Bearhunter, I for one wish you would hang around. I like hearing bear stories.
Also, I approve of your method of hunting.
Anyone questioning it should sit back and think of their own style of hunting.

Me too. Running hounds after bears is different than some people think. Have some buddies in that Maryville crowd and I know a little about how tough these hunts are. I like the Plotts myself.

Bearhoundsman, stick around man, there's room for everyone. I too like hearing your stories. Yeah, there's a chance of dogs getting hurt, but the people I know who run dogs, treat them better then most treat people.

I didn't mean for you to run off, I just didn't agree with your method of hunting. Hang around and defend yourself. My intentions were not to make you question your methods, I just didn't understand them.
I'm sorry my beliefs on this don't match yours. I have a choc lab that is as close to family as anything could get. I don't know what I would do if I lost him. It would just be really hard for me to think about loosing him on a hunt. It would tear me up...that my main thing aginst it. Hang around, just because someone doesn't agree with something you posted doesn't mean you should leave.

Grant, I'll tell you from experience that ANYTIME you take a dog hunting that it could end in death for the dog. Any kind of hunting. Last week, a hunter drwned in Indiana, along with his dog. Dogs get hit by cars, fall in wells, or any number of things that can happen. I've even seen a coon hound killed by a train. Some types of hunting may be riskier than others, no doubt. It's a fact of life.

Multi, yes, but would you not agree that a dog would have a greater chance of loosing his life on a bear hunt as a duck hunt? I didn't mean to stur up such a stink here. I tried to express my views and some handle it well and others don't. Sorry for the mess.

Dogs do what they're bred to do, might be coons, ducks, bears or land mines.

Depends on where you duck hunt....... I've seen guys send dogs on retrieves I wouldn't take my boat on.... There is always an element of risk in whatever sport you follow. South Dakota's pheasent opener this year, they reported dogs dying of heat because it was so warm on opening day. My cousin was heading to Montana to mountain lion hunt. He had three dogs in the back of his pickup in an enclosed box, had a strong tail wind and the topper filled with carbon monoxide and killed all three dogs. He stopped in Fargo to let them out and found all three curled up like they were sleeping. He said he cried his eyes out right there on the road. I think most of us who hunt with dogs, know this risk, and accept it as part of the hunt. I wouldn't knowingly send my dog out on a retrieve that was beyond her capablity or if I thought she could not make it. She is like family to me. But there is risk in it all.

No need for anyone to apoligize. Grant you are entitled to your opinion and from your position it is a valid opinion and you have the right to raise it. Bear Houndsman, you certainly have the right to pursue your style of hunting in the age old tradition that you do. That not everone will agree with you is just the way things are. No one means anything personal about it and you shouldn't take it personally. Many people do agree with you and wants to know more. I've seen dogs cut up while boar hunting, then again, I saw a beagle kill itself while running rabbits by impaling itself on a sharp stick. I don't want to see any four legged hunting partner hurt, as I'm sure that both of you don't want to either. Stick around, we need both of you and a lot more like you, after all its us aga'n them.

I guess I missed the disagreement, but just wanted to comment that I certainly have nothing against bear hunting with dogs. It's not my first choice of something to do outdoors but if we don't hang together, we hang separately.

I still hate that people got upset over my views of this subject. I just have never dealt with the death of pets well. I have a 2 1/2 yead old choc lab and if anything were to evey happen to him on a hunting trip I don't think I could handle it. Bears dogs are bread for that so I'm sure he has a different relationship with his dogs that I have with my dog(not meaning anything negative by that). Bear, if it makes you feel any better, I have gotten as much negative feedback for not agreeing with it as you have for it.

go to the turkey talk forum select the general talk, i think the pics are on the 3rd or 4th page under the topic bearhoundsman's pics.
i'm over it all guys i just got highly ticked of when i thaught he was emplying that i was just sending dogs out to get killed. i've got a different relationship with my dogs than one might have with a lab. i spend thousands of dollars a year just on feeding the dogs and they have a place in my heart and not just because of the money i've spent on them. i've raised these dogs and trained them myself. i've given up more for these dogs than most people would ever think of giving up for a regular pet. i'm not going to let one person not agreeing with me affect my hunting methoids it'll take the law and the good lord working together to do that. what i do i've done my whole life. i got started coon hunting at a young age and started bear hunting when i was big enough to keep up. hunting with hounds is bred into me as much as the will to hunt is bred into my dogs.

I don't think anyone accept bearhoundsman know the "special" bond some of you think you have with your dogs that bear man knows. Can you imagine going into a bear fight with your most respected and favorite dog? Can you imagine the adrenaline and the intensity of the situation at hand? I am sure that when one of his dogs is lost. It is a great inner tragedy. To lose an animal that you have enough faith in and respect for to hunt bears with, on the ground, face to face, its you and your animals....WOW....what a awsome way to hunt. I read a story from a man in Argentina that lost his favorite dogo in a fight with a boar. He had a camera crew there to film the hunt. The boar got loose and charged the man. His dogo ran in between the boar and him and in the process took a tusk to the jugular, giveing the guy just enough time to get his gun on it and kill it. That dog saved his life. He cried his eyes out right there and sent the film crew away.
Don't tell me that he doesn't hurt or feel alot of pain for one of his dogs that he looses, I know he does! He is just not telling you that.
I will try to find that story and post it here. Its really intense!

been coon hunting some young dogs getting them started treeing so they'll hopefull make bear dogs, they'll get their first crack at it this weekend.
you are right about dogs saving people i've seen it happen personally and have had a few sets of pants ruint by claws saving a few dogs, so it's not only the dogs putting thier selves at risk for me often i've put myself at risk for them we work as a team.

the fist pic is of the 524lb bear that hurt all the dogs. he was 7'6.5"
long from end of nose to botttom of rear foot. 6' was the measurement
around his stomach.30" around the widest part of his head. he was killed
on the ground at around 10 yards.
in the second picture i'm holding a 380lb class bear that was also taken
on the ground at close range he didn't hurt but a couple of dogs
