Just curious what you think. Do you think prisons should be tougher on inmates? The penalties for crimes tougher etc... Ill tell you from exp that prisons dont rehab the vast majority of people. The recidivisom rate is over 60%..Ive worked in three different prison systems so Ive seen plenty. Prison does different things to different people. Some have a hard time of it, some actually have a better life. All in all criminlas have most everything in prison they strived for on the outside. Sex,drugs and weapons. The only thing they dont have is freedom.

I think they are too tough on some and not tough enough on others. I'd like to see more violent offenders and sexual predators and less people charged with victimless crimes.

The sentences given are somewhat "misbalanced"..Ive saw where plenty of gangabangers killed someone, pleaded down to manslaughter then got out in 8 years. On the other hand Ive saw 70 year old men who cant get out because they commited armed robbery 40 years ago:rolleyes:

I personally don't think that prisioners should get cable tv, internet access, or most of the other amenities that they get. With a little stiffer stint in the clink, it may deter people from committing more crimes.

I think convicts should make small rocks out of big rocks. These are about all of the things I would give an inmate.

1. 16 pound sledge hammer
2. A pair of gloves
3. 1600 calories a day
4. All the water they wanted to drink.

If you worked them 12 hours a day and let them sleep the rest of the time I will almost garruntee you not many would be repeat offenders. HEATH

I have saw plenty of cases like that on TV. I agree with you.

Agreed. Make prison life a little harder for those that are there.

I have worked corrections at a large county Jail, a Federal Pen and briefly in Baghdad. The Federal inmates have it made in the shade, They get 3 hots and a rack, tv, rec center, medical care, etc. They can earn money and can pursue education. I loved working at Fayette county if the pay had been just a little bit more I would have never left. Fayette county is a state of the art direct supervision facility (this means the there is no where that the CO (Corrections Officer) can not see in the pod (place where the inmates live). If you have see the HBO show OZ that's pretty much how it looks. Chow come to the unit on a cart and there is little or no contraband that makes into the units. The Federal Pens have "controlled " moves where inmate run around all crazy all the time. Most inmates are getting around 10 years for a drug charge. I can't believe people sell drugs when people go down for that long.

Big difference in the way a state pena nd federal pen are run. The federal pen Im from is a USP and its still not quite as tight as the state joint I came from(EKCC) Now there was a tight joint;)..Ive been to about 5 or 6 federal pens and Im happy to say the one I came from was the best of the bunch. Our has wall to wall cameras and is built tight. Still not as good as EKCC but a lot better than the other fed joints Ive been to. The USP fed inmates are insane. They have no respect for anyone or anybody. They rat on each other and cut on each other like its nothing. You wanna talk about bad I worked at a CCA facility for a year about 8 or 9 years ago. That was horrible...

Not even close to being hard enough, "an eye for an eye", whatever a criminal does he or she should have it done back to them in turn and then serve some time to think about their crime.

Not harsh enough, especially on the ones that deserve it! You guys should watch MSNBC when they do shows on prisons called "Lockup"

Yeah, I watch that stuff on courtTv all the time. "American Jail" and "Inside". The Inside show is the same as the "Lockup", they just changed the name and the channel.

The Penal System is in bad shape. "Catch and release is for fish, not Felons" I think the justice system has it backwards!

Everybody wants more of em locked up, with stiff sentences.

Problem is, nobody wants to have to pay the bill for that to happen.

Yes at the sum total of 57K a year per inmate(USP level) times 1800 inmates(One prison).....hmm...thats 102,600,000 per year for that one prison..... The federal bureau of prisons has 104 prisons:D thats nothing compared to 50 states worth of prisons. This should give you an idea of the costs...Of course a USP level federal inmate is a bit more expensive to keep up than the norm..

Screw the citizens payin the bill !!! Let the criminals earn the funds to keep their butts housed !!!

I think the state penal system should be modeled after that Sherrif in Texas !

Screw their TV's and all the other perks they get. Let those Rat Ba$$ard'o$ pay their own bills. Whatever they do for a crime should equal their punishment !

Rape= inserting a test tube you know where, then smack it with a hammer !!!
Theft = cutting off first hand at the wrist !!! Second conviction = loss of second hand, Third conviction = loss of leg, Forth conviction = loss of other leg.
Murder = trial, then choice of execution within 90 days !!! IF THEY are caught in the act it is an automatic firing squad immediately !!!
Child Abuse = shot on sight, no trial !!!
Drunk driving = get offender drunk and turn loose on foot in the middle of a 6 lane highway @ 5pm !!!

Get the point ? It should slow down or stop the major crimes if the system is adheared too !!! You don't see this crap happen in other countries ! ;)

Just how long do you think that would last ?  NOT too long !!! The Defense Lawyers should be first to experiment with this !!! :D

I've always been a fan of taking them to the swamp and tieing them to a stump method myself. Ya'll ain't got much swamp up here in KY so we swap swamp for forest and deer ticks for gators...same idea...maybe a little slower and more painful (not that that's a bad thing :) )

i posted in another thread about blinding inmates as a cheaper and more effective way to manage them and someone posted that the constitution forbid it. i suppose it seems inhumane and cruel unless u happen to be the victum of a rapsit or murder then maybe not.i see nothing wrong with inmates working on road gangs but they say that is also inhumane.i think the system we now have of warehousing them is soon gonna be much to high for a state to run and when it goes private it may be better or worse , i don't know enough to really say on that but i know what we are doing now does not make most of them a better person .

I say if found guilty ( No 2nd guessing either ) Murder equals automatic death within 30 days. Robbery= cut off hand, Rape= neuterd, child Molesting or abuse= Let Parents have their way with guilty party for 1 hour, then put to death.

drug offenders, all other criminals...Put to work on chain gangs taring and graveling roads. Cutting weeds or whatever else needs done, get them out picking up trash and by all means there won't be no TV, radio's, cards, board games etc.

Any money they think they might make, they lose it back to help pay for their stay in prison. Plus they will have to plant crops raise cattle and animals of the such in order to eat.... Make Prison like a farm, where it is self contained and runs by it's own members.

No one said Prison was supposed to be a cake walk and easy.......

I think CL nailed it. The only thing I would change is rapists and child molesters. I say you set them on fire and put them out, let them heal and do it all over again.

I think EVERY prisoner should have to work to pay their way in jail. No TV, internet, recreation, nothing. Hard labor earning your way and sleep. Somebody said it earlier. Some of these people have a better life in prison than they do on the street. That should NEVER be the case.

if prisons become harsh nasty places to be i would bet that your repeat offender rate would plummet.
