Guys,

I know that we as varmit hunters can not carry buckshot in the field for hunting reasons but I was hoping that someone out there could give me a better explaination of why we can not use this ammunition other than its illegal. I have had several discussions with a CO and he sticks to the line of "You may shoot a deer if you have buck shot". Last time I checked .30 calibers and .22 calibers can kill one just as fast and at greater distances so I just don't get it. Is there another side or reason that you know of.

I don't know what their reasoning is on that. You can use Dead Coyote "T" shot. I use copperplate "BB" shot when I take my shotgun.

The same reason that KDFWR won't let you hunt predators at night with a light....They are afraid someone will use it as an excuse to poach a deer.

This is not only flawed logic, it's downright RETARDED!

Illinois has even more stringent game laws than Ky, yet they allow both buckshot, and night hunting with lights for predators...Poachers are going to get their deer regardless...KDFWR is not even a concern for a determined poacher.

There are some stupid rules out there, and we know poachers are going to poach no matter what. But if there were no rules at all, then it would all be madness. I personally would like to hunt a few yotes at night, but understand why the law is as it is. There are far more people I DON'T want out shooting something at night than I do.
