Anybody used a 17 HMR on varmints? How did it perform?

shot a coyote in the head at 40 yards needless to say he had a splitting headache and a very bad hair day probably would only take head shots on something this big but everyone has there own opinion.

Shot a coyote at 20 yards with the hornady V-max behind the shoulder. Put him down but required a head shot to finish the deal.
For coyotes - head shots only but still not a long range coyote gun 100 yards max.
However will put 5 shots in a 3/4 inch group at 100 yds.
Awesome fun to shoot.
Put a good high power scope on to get the most out of it's accuracy. I went with a 12 power but which I had more magnification to really take advantage of the accuracy on small , distant targets

I have a Savage w/ Bull barrel and really like it. Coyotes and Ground Hogs really hate it. ;)

Yeah I bought a savage with bull barrel from work a couple months ago and love it...haven't got to test it on some critters yet though.

Do any of you find your HMR to favor any particular brand of ammo over another, I have a savage and can't get it to group worth a dime.

Are you sighting it in from a solid rest? Is your scope on tight and is it a good scope? I use the hornady and they group great I have a 3-9x40 bushnell banner. Thats all I have tried ammo wise, but you can't really go wrong with hornady

My Savage shoots all ammo good. I think the TNT 17 gr HP's do a better job on groundhogs than the 20 gr Gamepoints. You get a better "SMACK" when it hits.:D
They will all blow around a little in the wind. Have to sight in on a calm day.
