New animals are being seen in parts of the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest and on surrounding lands -- dozens of wild or feral hogs. And they are not welcome.
"They're very destructive and we're concerned about diseases that they could possibly carry," said Roger Fauver, Bernheim's operations director. "At first we thought maybe they were just some local hogs that had gotten out and gone wild, but it's been rumored in the area that somebody brought some in from Arkansas."

This would be fun. I wonder if you can go there and take hogs?

Don't count on Bernhiem or the neighbors to allow much hunting. Back when the deer herd was straving, they tried a special hunt that didn't have much success because of the neighbors not allowing hunting.

One of my friends gets to deer hunt Bernheim ( special invitation by the employees) & he seen the hogs last year but didn't know if it was legal to shot them. When he got back to the station & inquired, they told him yes there were some hogs running around & they were allowed to shot if the opportunity arose. He never didn't see them again but he's gonna try to take some this year. If he does I'll try to past some pictures.

Must have just happened in the last few years.I hunted Bernheim in 2001 and there was no sign of hogs or even a mention of any being around. If someone really did bring them in and turned them loose they need to be horse-whipped.With that much land off-limits to hunting the majority of the time, they could gain a permanent foothold around here.

Just another problem that Bernheim has created by not allowing the proper amount of hunting. This, just like the the deer starvation episode could have been prevented.

Since this poses a threat to all wildlife in and out of the park,I wonder if KDFWR can/could step in and mandate some sort of eradication effort. 60-100 hogs sounds like a little more than a problem, sounds like the biggest concentrated population of feral pigs in the state.Just a hop, skip, and a jump from a lot of the impact area at Ft. Knox, they get in there and Cental Ky. will have a population of wild pigs for keeps, whether we want them or not.

No, it's private property and the owners control who hunts and who don't. Hogs won't survive long on Knox if they go there, the wild goats didn't. BTW-- Hunt Control did not allow shooting the goats by hunters.....somehow though they ended up gone about 3 years after they showed up.

I really hope you're right.Wild hogs running all over the place is def. trouble we don't need. I've hunted down south were they're fairly prevelant and seen what a mess they're capable of making. If there really are that many loose in/around Bernheim I just don't see them ever being totally eradicated.

I don't think it matters if its private property. The way KDFW regs read, they have jurisdiction over things that present a risk to the wildlife in this state. This all came out during the feeding ban, which tells people that they can't bait during certain times on PRIVATE PROPERTY.
I think Redlined brings up a good point, and its a good question for the dept, but I bet they could intervene if they deem a serious threat. And a hundred hogs, they way they multiply IS a serious threat.

I have hunted Bernheim for the past 10 years or so. We just started to see the hogs last year. They are a pain in the but, the area I had scouted last year was just full of acorns the week we scouted it was all you could do to walk down a old logging road. Opening day there wasnt one in sight and the ground was just tore up. I hope to take a couple of them this fall. I believe they killed a few of them last season but when me and my buddy was coming out of there one night there had to be 50 or 60 of them standing in the road. Some of the guys reported seeing them close to 500 lbs, that will make it fun walking to your stand in the mornings.

As far as hunting out there we keep the deer numbers in pretty good shape if you ask me. There aren't as many deer as everyone thinks.

Best of luck to you guys tomorrow.

Saw a show on TV about a week ago and that guy said there were wild hogs in about 40 states. If you got them, they were hard to eliminate due to their high reproductive rates. He said, you did not want them. They do a lot of damage.
