I use bore butter when my gun isn't in use. But I always clean out the bore butter before shooting it. I was just wondering if I would have to clean out the bore butter or not bofore shooting it? I shoot a Thompson Center Fire Thunder Hawk Shadow. Thank for any info.

I use the bore butter too, but I always pop a few caps and run a dry patch down it prior to loading, so yes, I clean it out somewhat before shooting. I only use a light coat of it though.

All I use is the T/C Seasoning Patches. I clean it with these and that's it. No soap and water, no oil, etc. After each shot, I run one of these patches down the barrel to clean out the fouling. After I'm done shooting at the end of the year, I take the breech plug out and clean it and the nipple. I run the seasoning patches down the barrel until there's no more foulin on them. That's it.

I use the Bore Butter also, I however do the whole soap & water bit too. Before I load I run a clean dry patch down the barrel. Also fire a cap or two after cleaning.

My friend and I have been muzzleloading for 6 years including target shooting prior to each season. Both of us differ in our approach to maintenance of the barrel BUT both have lead to very very little chance of misfire. I shoot percussion only and he shoots inline. In storage, I use this technique. 1) Boiling water soak and plunge until ALL of the fouling is out. You will know this b/c the water will be clear and not black. If you keep the gun clean continually it will not stick. During this time, soak breech plug and nipple separately (as in they are detached from one another). Clean out plug and nipple. Leave off of gun. Let all parts dry very well. Should not take long considering the temp of your water i.e. boiling water dries very fast. Coat barrel (outside and in) with ANY type of regular gun oil. Place nipple and plug in a plastic baggie and squeeze the air out. It will store until next season perfectly. Prior to shooting, run a patch WITH rubbing alcohol through the barrel SEVERAL times. Let dry. This will remove the gun oil. Re attach plug and nipple. Shoot. I do this b/c I never knew/know how much bore butter should be in the barrel AND I can not reagulate the amount that is stored in the breech due to the fact it is closed i.e. an in line works well b/c the rod exits the barrel and should leave any excess butter in your receiver NOT the barrel. My friend uses soap and water and bore butter only. Simply, soak, clean with rod and coat with butter. Then shoot. He does not remove the butter prior to shooting. Again, both of us had very very little misfires. Hope that helps from both a percussion and in line perspective.
