I have a question about the bow hunting in LBL.

A friend and I visited LBL last year at the very end of september. We didn't have much luck at all. I was wondering, what time of the year is the best time to bow hunt at LBL. And also, which areas area the best environment for bow hunting. Just lookin for some pointers. Thanks.

the lbl does not open when the state bow season opens it opens on
september 22
I HUNTED IN AREA 4 LAST YEAR IT WAS OK BUT THIS YEAR I AM GOING TO LOOK AT SOME OTHER AREAS. IT ALL LOOKS LIKE GOOD BOW HUNTING GROUND YOU JUST HAVE TO DO YOUR LEG WORK.
AND I DID NOT DO THAT LAST YEAR.
GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS JEFF ><>

When I said opening weekend, i meant opening weekend at LBL...this coming weekend I'll be dove hunting (for the first time as well)...I'm looking forward to dove hunting almost as much as I'm looking forward to bow hunting LBL.

I was there this weekend for some hiking around piney campground...saw a bunch of deer in the middle of the day. We got done hiking around 1200, took a shower (way to hot to hike), took a small nap then decided to go find a beach to swim off of. North Of Piney, I saw 4 deer (heard another guy who said he saw one I didn't see) all around 2:45pm. Don't know if this helps...Piney is in the TN section...but it surprised me to see deer moving around in the middle of the day.

oh yeah, he campground deer. lots of them at hillmans also. area wise, hard to give advice. but I will tell you this, find a good funnel. they are few and far between in the vast forrest of LBL. here in the suburbs, there are so many houses and small farms the deer are easily funneled. there, it's huge!!!!!! good luck.

The key is to find what the deer are eating.Spend more time scouting and less time in a tree. It's really tough hunting during years of heavy oak mast.
This year should be simpler with poor acorn production.

Here is a tip:

Try hunting the lake edge where the fresh green grass has taken over the lake shore. Find a good trail coming from the woods to the lake edge and hunt there. We have killed a lot of deer using this method in the early season.

I was at LBL Sunday afternoon... scouting a little and attempting to reduce the squirrel population. I was in a spot I hunted years ago in area 7. It was hot ,dry...wind blowing a little and I pretty much figured seeing any squirrels was'nt going to happen. I had covered quite a bit of ground and yet to find any acorns. I sat down on ridge and maybe 10 minutes had passed.... here comes a squrrel bouncing through the trees.

He was out of range but was on a mission so I sat there and watched him. He went just off the end of the ridge I was sitting on and all got quiet. Then I started hearing acorns hitting the ground. I slipped on down the ridge and wasnt no time here come two more squirrels. I ended up killing all three and when I picked the last squirrel up.... a group of deer winded me that were heading right to that tree. I did'nt even know they were there.

All I can say...out of a gazillion oaks I had walked past... one tree had acorns. If you want to be successful at LBL you need to do some serious scouting and find those trees. This was a red oak but it was like a candy store. I may use a climber in that area when LBL bow season comes in but I'm afraid with all the critters hitting that tree...they will have moved on. Hopefully I can get out a few more times and find a few more trees.

my advise would be to find out if and when they are having the national coon dog championships and don't try to hunt that week! last time i hunted lbl that was going on and there were trucks and dogs EVERYWHERE! i think between 6 of us bowhunters, we saw 2 does all week. last time for me there.

Jamey, next time you go please stop by the house and I'll give you some green markers to use so that I kind find those producing trees.

Thanx:D
